14" wheels w/ disc brake conversion

Thinking about going to front disc brakes with a conversion kit on my 67 Malibu. I currently have 14" x 6 (maybe x 7) Crager SS wheels. Will any of the aftermarket kits fit with these wheels? I've read where most people have to go up to 15" wheels after installing disc kits. I just put on a new set of Diamondback Redlines this summer, and don't want to have to buy new wheels & tires.

If you want to go with disk, a stock disk setup from say, a '69 would likely work.

There are also conversion kits avl, try True Connections.

Re: 14" wheels w/ disc brake conversion

Be aware that discs ususally require a wheel with a greater positive offset, or more backspacing, due to the calipers. Most 'standard' custom wheels like Cragar, ARE, etc. designed for custom street use generally have just the opposite, less backspacing than stock for a 'deep dish' look.

You may have to forego the Cragars in favor of a set of GM rally-type wheels that were designed for disc brake applications or make the move to 15" or larger wheels. Another option would be wheel spacers but you may have to increase your wheel stud length to compensate for the spacer thickness.

Didn't the 67ss that came with disc brakes have 14" ralleys?

Yep, mandatory due to the offset the rallys provided

If you know anyone local to you with a 69-72 Chevelle, GTO, Monte Carlo, Cutlass, Skylark, etc with discs, just ask if you can test fit them.

Re: 14" wheels w/ disc brake conversion

I converted my 69 cutlass to disc brakes, using stock A body components applicable to that year. Not the tall spindle swap, or the big 12 inch rotors, just stock 11 inch stuff. They caused no problems with my stock 14 inch Olds rally wheels. I suspect all rally wheels will be fine also, if you stay stock 11 inch A body rotor setup. Can't say how the Cragers will do, so hopefully someone will chime in with direct experience.

My Keystones were fine -- I never even considered it when I did the my conversion with stock parts. There are factory 14 inch wheels for drum cars that won't clear discs though.
