Re: Upgrading my '65 El Camino

So close

Interior just needs seat installed.

Yesterday got brakes bleed -- cooling done (hoses, fan, spacer, clutch, A/T lines) .

It was late and I haven't added water to check for leaks and didn't want to find any as I would have kept working.

Also no pics yesterday.

Hopefully today I get coolant in and checked out thet I can let engine run for longer the 15-20 second as I have been doing. Then I can hook up timing light & vacuum gauge and get everything tuned.

I think it will take a week to clean and polish everything.

Re: Upgrading my '65 El Camino

2nd post today (see above) BUT I'm 99% done

Added water and started ELKY --- No leaks --- Let it run and check timing which was dead on which was a 1st for me in all the years always need a little tweeking. Continued to let it idle and temp stay at 180° even with A/C on.

Need to re-bleed brakes -- seem kind of mushy.

Also spotted leak under transmission in the vacinty of cooling lines BUT I think it probably is the NEW Flex-Dip-Stick seal. Even with gobbs of sealant I would put my $$$ on it.

Need to fabricate a bracket for the heater & A/C hoses on right fender well. Then hood & seat and a big clean job.

Now it's grass-cutting time

GM Sport Wheel - Found on late 60's & Early-mid 70's Chevy, Olds, Buicks & C3 Corvette. Also called comfort grip. Colors were black, tan, red & blue (I think that was all).

Need matching hub and horn contact & button

Usually found on Ebay -- gettnig pricey.

BTW-- I have a Tan one with hub, contact & button off of a buick.

This Elky is making me seriously reconsider my planned direction with mine. Really nice car.

Re: Upgrading my '65 El Camino

After a few days of tuning and adjusting finally put the hood back on

Have been driving, couple of cruises, one long test run and a few to-store-and-backs. Only problem(s) was one small water leak (loose heater hose clamp). And one BIG problem -- had a major FLAT spot coming off idle and/or low RPM. Timing was dead on as was vacuum advance. The intake and carb (Holley 670 Avenger) we previous on my '65 Vette and didn't give me any problems. However, the carb had sat for a while and the accelerator pump had dried out, replace it and improve somewhat. Did vacuum test and it was a little almost same as Vette only difference was Vette is 5 speed manual and ELKY has turbo 350 and I think the I probably feather the clutch a litte with this set up on the Vette. Determined that the original power valve “6.5” was a bit to strong so bumped up the a 7.5 and like magic the FLAT spot was gone. During all this time I also swapped out the jets to improve performance and along with new Mallory Unilite distributor, new plug wires & plugs I now have steady pull all the way up through 5000 RPM (that’s a high a I’ve tried) with out a mis-fire or sputter.
On my longer test run which was Interstate ~65 MPH with cruise-control on – then stop-and-go – then some good old Missouri twisty back roads everything seem to work just fine. So I can finally same “I’m Done” --- NOT really because these cars are NEVER DONE

One other note is that even with A/C on and HOT weather water temp stayed very close to 180 -- Thanks Alumitech

George

Awesome! I've thoroughly enjoyed following your improvements.

You're way too organized, George. Shops shouldn't be that neat. :-)

Re: Upgrading my '65 El Camino

What sort of modifications did you have to make in order to accomidate that kick panel speaker and the parking brake lever? Thats exactly the sort of thing I have been trying to figure out and have a few ideas in my head.
