4WD El Camino project

Well, I figured if Turbo Tom can 'destroy' his cool 292 turbo El, then I can 'destroy' my '81 with a 4x4 conversion.
Just getting started, but here you go:

Re: 4WD El Camino project

i love 4x4 el caminos. I remember reading an article in Pick, Van, & 4wd magazine when I was a teen about a guy in SoCal who made 2, used 1/2 ton axles and transfer case. welded his own leaf spring brackets (slotted in the front for suspension forgiveness). I think they were a 68 and 69.

Re: 4WD El Camino project

I think they are kinda neat too... something different. I remember seeing one at the el camino drags at LA county raceway running the 1/4 back in the late 80's. I don't think I would like the 4X4 conversion when it's a super sport though.

Don't think I've ever seen that year done. Kind of looks beefy. I like it! Don't lift it any higher, looks factory that way!

There is a 69 4x4 here in Arizona I have seen. It is lifted so high you can limbo under it. Looks mean tho.

thats sweet, the ride height looks perfect on it, has an awesome stance to it that definitely sets it apart, keep it up

Re: 4WD El Camino project

Hi Ron, really cool 4x4 conversion! I like the stout and aggressive stance in your design, really cool. So I guess now we can be called the 'Odd Couple' although I still haven't been able to sneak the check book away from my wife for my mid engine design waaaaaaaaaaaaaaa or maybe we can get Chip Foose to turn loose? Oh well Have Fun

Re: 4WD El Camino project

I'd like to see someone do a 4x4 El Camino in a Pro Touring vein. Think like making it in the lines of an Audi Quattro or a Subaru WRX: 4 wheel drive but with an ultimate high performance style instead of an off-road style.

Re: 4WD El Camino project

Thanks for the positive feedback guys, it's good to see other folks 'get it'. I'm psyched to have a plan together and get started on it, been 6 years since the light came on.
Anyway, let me tell you about my other idea ..............

Re: 4WD El Camino project

It's cool. You need to rig a winch hidden in the front bumper, and put a light bar on it.

That would be really easy if you used a S10/Cyclone drivetrain, since it already uses a turboed 4.3L V6 which is basically a SBC V8 with a couple of cylinders sectioned out and they were setup as all wheel drive vehicles to begin with.Wish I had the room and the time

Re: 4WD El Camino project

That's kinda what I'm doing, John. The thing is I don't want A big dump of snow to stop me. Also, the frame is already a couple inches into the floor now.

Re: 4WD El Camino project

I have seen quite a few 4WD conversions, including a true 70 SS454 Convertible (I know it gave me a small heart attack), a pinto wagon,81 malibu wagon, 79 Camaro, and some I can't remember right now. I think the 68-72 Elcamino's look the best, although I could never bring myself to do it. Here is a pretty cool car:
