Correct intake/air cleaner, '69 SS?

What is the correct air cleaner and intake manifold for a big block 69 Chevelle? One that fits under the hood.

Re: Correct intake/air cleaner, '69 SS?

The horsepower is around 440, with an aluminum heads, ZZ454 crate motor. Previous owner installed a Edelbrock carb, and a standard looking 3 inch air cleaner. He then proceeded to cut a hole in the inner hood so it wood fit. :-(
I think part of the problem is the base of the air cleaner isn't as deep as it could be, but not sure about that. I would like to get the correct parts, then replace the hood.

Buy a repro open element air cleaner from a Chevelle parts vendor like NPD. It comes with the proper drop base and factory appearing chrome lid.

If you are looking for what came as stock equipment on 1969 SS 396 cars, 325 and 350 HP 396 versions came with medium rise, cast iron, oval port intakes and Quadrajet carburetors, while the 375 HP version was fitted a with square bore (Holley carb) aluminum intake that had large rectangular ports. If I recall correctly the 325 HP engine came with an enclosed element air cleaner with a long snout. This air cleaner was painted black. The 350 and 375 HP engines came with an open element air cleaner with a chrome cover. The bases were not the same, however, as the top of the Q-Jet and Holley carbs were different.

Re: Correct intake/air cleaner, '69 SS?

I am commenting to receive notifications regarding this topic. I have encountered a similar issue before but I ended up spending quite a sum of money at a dealership workshop. They helped me to rectify the problem which was actually caused by the previous owner. If I am able to handle the situation myself since the workshop said it was nothing major, it would definitely help to save so much money if the issue were to arise again.

The repro open element air cleaners are the same and fit both 350 hp Q jets and 375 hp Holleys. A repro or original open element ac should fit fine under a stock hood with a 454 crate motor with no cutting req'd.
