Anyone ever seen an original valve cover with a decal below the 327 sticker that says either 250 HP or 300 HP ? 65 Assembly manual shows the Decalcomania (whatever that means) as either 250 or 300. There should be something that shows a ghost of a decal on the originals. I'm thinking these were real decals and not metal like the center sticker that says 327 Turbo Fire. They are shown right on top of the curve just below the 327 sticker.
Lou, Rich is not trying to sell you anything. He's trying to help you answer your own question. Did you check out the link, great reference material even if you not looking to purchase. Rich is an example of one of the many contributing members here that make the site an information treasure trove. He knows his small blocks too.
I've seen originals on 350hp, 300hp and 250hp engines and a few 283s as well. Just trying to tell you where you can buy them. Many reproductions out there now are mylar stickers which look okay but do not look original.
So Rich was that a foil type decal AKA sticker type or a water slide that you saw ? Are those reproductions a sticky back type paper or foil decal or water slide. I'm talking only of the 250 or 300 horsepower decals. Thanks for the link. Good stuff there.
The ones in the link should be the waterslide decals. Might want to call Volunteer to confirm. Other vendors only sell the mylar ones for some reason. To be clear, the "327" stickers in the middle of the valve covers should be foil peel and stick stickers, the horsepower decals are waterslide decals.
You asked about originals. The original horsepower decals were all waterslide decals. As such, all the originals I've seen were waterslide decals. Never really understood why the factory used waterslide decals. Installing them must have been more trouble and more time consuming and thus more costly than a simple peel and stick sticker would have been.
Working with water slide decals is an art. For the person that's restoring it's no big deal if you follow instructions but doing one after the other, there must have been mistakes. I'll put them on just to be authentic , but I'm not so sure my covers actually had them. Not even a hint of a decal being there.
Thanks
Lou
