Looking through some '65 sales lit I have, it indicates that although the six cylinder engines were available in all body and trim styles, and were a lower cost alternative than the V8, the 2 barrel 283 was actually the "standard" engine. You could "option" a 230 for fewer $$.
I've seen a couple of six banger ss 65s, they're kinda neat.

'65 SS conv (having motivation "issues")
'66 SS conv (L78 car, but putting in a late motor so I can drive it)
'65 Camino (ZZ4, M-21, EFI, daily driver & shop truck, still gets awards)
'64 Camino (Grandpa's original 6 cyl, 3 spd, dents and all)
'66 BB Camino (no motor, Don't know what to do with it)
