1965 and 1966 Floor Shift Carpet Grommet

I've found someone willing to consider making a reproduction of the carpet grommet used with the floor shift 1966 bench seat and bucket seat without console. The vendor needs an original to look at and wants to KEEP the original for reference if the reproductions are made. The vendor is offering the donor a free reproduction of the grommet when completed. This is a photo of what is needed (item in upper right).

This is a picture of my grommet and I am not willing to part with it. If you have one of these, in any condition, that you are willing to part with for a good cause please PM or Email me for the contact information. The company is Steele Rubber Products, but I will provide more information.

I was with you all the way until the KEEP part. Why keep it? Keep an early good reproduction and send the original back to the nice guy who lent it to you.

Re: 1966 Floor Shift Carpet Grommet

The vendor wants somebody to donate an original that they keep and you get a reproduction in return????

Sounds like a win to me!.................NOT.

Why don't they buy one off of Ebay, they come around every now and then for sale.

Re: 1966 Floor Shift Carpet Grommet

Thanks, guys.

I made a mistake when I wrote the title and description for this. I should have included 1965, as 1965 and 1966 are the same except for some different colors. So a 65 grommet would do just fine as well.

Also, the vendor mentioned that he would probably only do them in black, other colors would have to be sprayed to match by the owner.

I defy you to show me one auction where one of these was for sale in any condition. I have scoured e-bay and Craigs list for 5+ years for one of these and I have never ever seen one. They are unicorns as far as I'm concerned.

I have never looked for one, and nobody mentioned anything about NOS, Not me anyways.
A few years back I had a friend who converted his 66 hardtop to 4-speed bench seat car, (was an automatic), He found one within a short time of looking, A few weeks a few phone calls and he had one. Right place at the right time I suppose.
Either way the vendor is asking for a donor and then you get a reproduction in return, while they KEEP the ORIGINAL.
That doesn't fly with me. I wouldn't want a reproduction if I had an original to begin with.

Vendor needs to keep a prototype he makes and give the original back....otherwise can't ever see this happening.

Re: 1966 Floor Shift Carpet Grommet

Rich,
Could you please put a sticky on this post for a while, and change the title to include 1965 so the 65 guys will take notice? Thanks.
Bruce

I'll send Rich a PM to make sure he notices this.

Re: 1965 and 1966 Floor Shift Carpet Grommet

I do have an original 65 carpet grommet.
I would consider letting a vendor use it for a pattern.
I would not consider letting the vendor keep my original.

Under the present circumstances I would not send it to the vendor in question because I would probably not get the original back.

I supplied original parts to a vendor before with the understanding I would get my stuff back. It never came back even with multiple requests. The vendor was a long ways away so it was not practical to go make a "personal" request.

Re: 1965 and 1966 Floor Shift Carpet Grommet

Yep.... can't understand the need to keep the original, make a nice prototype and keep that one for your records...take plenty of pic's of the original and your good to go.
If I ever see one in a car at a show.....I may have to make the owner an offer they can't refuse.
