Question 66 Mirror Identification ?

I have two outside mirrors for a 66 chevelle. Was wondering which one might be correct. They both appear to be right style and shape for a 66 chevelle.

One has the number 3874242 and the words 'Pro Products made in usa' stamped in side the base, a bow tie symbol on the back side, and has a ring that retains the mirror glass part; but no DMI stamp on the glass.

The second one has "11 DMI 2" stamped on the mirror glass, does not have the metal ring retainer , No bow Tie, and I think the numbers 'N 151339' and a "2" stamped into the base.

Visually they look the same except for the bow tie symbol. I have a book that says the part # should be 3874240A; but I don't know if that is correct.

Can anyone identify these mirror for me. Thanks.

Re: 66 Mirror Identification ?

Thanks, was thinking the one with the bowtie and ring holding in the mirror would be correct where the mirror had been replaced . Think the other one was one made by Donnelly Mirror Inc in 72 as a replacement for 66 chevelle as well as late year 67 chevelle and the 67 & 68 camero.

Bowtie is correct for the 66 Chevelle mirror.

Re: 66 Mirror Identification ?

James:
The bow-tie mirror is the correct mirror for the 66. The original part number is 3874240 as you stated and has the emblem on the back. The Pro products mirror is a reproduction of the original as they have the GM rights to repo this mirror. The other mirror is a GM replacement mirror that was made for Chevelle, Camaro and Nova replacements.

Re: 66 Mirror Identification ?

Thanks, I was thinking that the mirror without the bow tie, with the 11 DMI 2 stamp was a replacement mirror by GM made during Nov of 72. I though The PRO mirror # 3874242 was not a repo mirror since it had the part number stamped into the base and also had the ring that retains the mirror and it had some pitting that make it looks like an old mirror. Bob are you saying this mirror is still reproduced by PRO Products? I see 66 mirrors with the bowtie advertized all the time. Do all these repro have the retaining ring for the mirro?

So am I correct in thinking the mirror with the DMI stamp would be an authentic GM replacement mirror that would be correct for late 67 & 68 Chevelle, , Nova, & Camaro's? And the 387242 is just a reproduction.

Re: 66 Mirror Identification ?

My mirror from a framingham car has CBC 3874242 mounting web C-2 cast into the base. Has the bowtie.

My other mirror from a California car has CBC 3874242 and behind the mounting web C-1 and has the bowtie.

Both mirrors are the same. They hold the mirror in place with an inside retaining ring.

Re: 66 Mirror Identification ?

Tom, does your 65 parts book show the 242 or 240 for the mirror #, maybe the book is wrong? The guy that I got the 3874242 mirror with the Pro logo from said it was an original mirror off a 67 camero and it has some pitting on the backside. I was going to have the mirror restored if I could verify that it was an original GM Mirror. I thought since it did not have the DMI stamp that maybe the mirror had been replaced or maybe it was a reproduction. Most likely there was more than one supplier making the mirrors in 66-67 with CBC being one. Maybe Pro Products was another? Did Donnally Mirror INC just make the mirror or did they make the base also? Anyone know? I see that www.oldmusclecars.com has a usa made 66 bowtie mirror with the retaining ring that holds the mirror in place and also an import that does not have the retaining ring.

Re: 66 Mirror Identification ?

James, I never even thought to look in my parts book.

I have one number in my 66 book for outside rear view mirror unit 3398251.
Also 3398586 1966 ALL - RIGHT. Interesting I thought they were the same left and right. Group 10.185 Both part numbers indicate they were new for this parts catalogue (Sorry for the Canadian spelling )

1968 parts book has 3398251 for 66-67 All.

I guess the parts books are no help for two reasons.

1) the books just state what mirror will work as a replacement.
2) I think the numbers we were quoting are the mirror base, casting number and not the mirror unit part number.

Re: 66 Mirror Identification ?

Yes we were talking about the # stamped on the base and it seems can be different than the part # for the mirror unit. My parts book is a CD from 74 and it only list 3909197 as outside mirror for a 66-68 chevelle. If you type in the 3874240A on www.oldmusclecars.com web site you get their USA built mirror for the 66 chevelle. It has the correct retainer ring; but don't know if it has a number stamped into the base.

My crash parts sheet from 67 list the replacement mirror as 986445. Maybe one # for the mirror glass, one # for the mirror base, and one # for the complete mirror.

Re: 66 Mirror Identification ?

Just received from a guy out east with 2 original outside mirrors for a 66 Chevelle Both have NH 151339 stamped into the base and both stamped with 5 DMI 6 on glass, its a Bal car and he is almost positive they are original to the car. So they must have been made by the Donnelly Mirror Inc. Anyone know who made the mirrors with the CCB 3874242 Mirrors? Thanks.

Re: 66 Mirror Identification ?

Mine, which I believe to be original (I wasn't there @ Fremont when they installed it ) has CBC 3874242 and C1 cast in the base; no stamp on the glass, retaining ring holds the glass in, bowtie.

This thread gave me an excuse to polish my mirror up real purty, anyway.
