I own a 1972 El Camino that has what seems to be a farely rare color scheem. It has a blue roof into the bed, then it is white on side body and hood, then back to blue at the rockers. It has all the molding seperating these colors. I was told that this option was a test to get ready for the 2 tone color option for the 73 model year. I am looking for production numbers on how many of 72 Elky's were painted this way.
Thanx

I've heard of 2-tone '72 El Camino's but I do not know if I have ever seen one. I think I saw a picture of one once. Anyways, from what I remember there was a piece of trim that ran about 6 or so inches below the bed moulding on either side. If you could, like Joey B said, get us the numbers in the PNT section of your cowl tag, we could make a better judgement on weather or not your Elky is a factory 2-tone car.

Yes, it exists as a second half of the '72 model year option. Photos seem to be rare, so I cannot tell you where to find one. I did a search on this a few years ago when I bought a similar EC. These are sometimes called the "3 tone " paint schemes.

Yes...elcamino72....there is a stainless molding that runs down the side of the bed. I am only the 3rd owner of this car and I still talk to the 1st. He owned it for 21 years....and YES it is the original paint scheem and color. It has 152,000 miles on it with a 350/350 TH, A/C, power disc, column shift with bucket seats, AM/FM slidebar stereo (still works). I will get the paint numbers as soon as I can (I am at work right now)

If you guys want to see a 2 tone 72 Elky in a different color than my blue/white one...follow this..
>goto Team Chevelle home page
>click on El Caminos in left column
>click on El camino features and links
>click onto Paul Week's 72 custom 2 tone
THAT'S WHAT I HAVE!!! Where this one is gold....mine is blue.
I also heard it was called a California two tone.

Thats cool as heck! I never heard of such a thing, but now i believe you 100%! I agree it looks like it was a trial run to see how the 73 2 tone paint scheme was gonna work out... I'd still like to see pics of yours, in a different color combo. Learned something new today!

Any idea if this 2 tone scheme was avaiable on SS caminos or just the Camino Custom? My guess would be just the custom, but 12 hours ago my guess would be that they never existed at all!

That is exactly what my elky looks like minus the tilt front end (YUK) and the hood stripes. I even have a white tonneu on it. But I have the mid to late 60's rally center caps on mine. That is tool kool to see another one like mine...same color and all!!!
ThanX

I spotted a 69 around here about a year ago with the added trim and two-tone color scheme. No reason I can think of that the molding wouldn't fit 68-72's. Could be pretty sharp if done tastefully.
