I have an empty 12 bolt housing I am putting together. I am trying to get the backlash set but I don't know where to start with shim packs. Everything I read says to use the same shims as found in the old rear. However, I don't have an old rear to check, I have an empty housing. If some rear end expert could give me a starting measurement I would greatly appreciate it!
What type of shims do you have? The super shim set is the best that I have used. I start with the differential in the housing with the bearing races installed. Push the ring gear against the pinion and find a shim combination that will slip easily in the left side. Then I go to the other side and select a shim combination that fits tight. Check the backlash with the dial indicator and make adjustments from there. Do not start on the right side, always start on the left, or ring gear side. If you start on the right side you may end up jaming the ring gear against the pinion and damaging some teeth. Always start with too much backlash.
The shim pack I have is the set included with my rebuild kit from Summit. I am finding it to be a little lacking in variety. Where could I get that super shim kit? I think your procedure sounds good and I will give it a try, thanks.
Thanks. I am still trying to figure out this backlash thing. It just seems really difficult to get an accurate reading without rotating the whole diff. when I rock it. I may actually have the shims I need, but I am not sure just yet.
Do you mean that the pinion is turning when you try to check the backlash? If that is the case then you don't have the pinion bearing preload tight enough.
