What is the difference between a race and a street tranny.

Full race units for the most part do not have any syncros, makes it real tough to drive one on the street. Some have different alloy gears as well and you know that when the price for a race unit can be double or triple the price of a street trans. I had no idea that Richmond was in the business of race units, Jerico and G-Force are the companies that I would consider for an all out race trans.

Something is tickling my memory, but before Richmond took over the tooling/marketing and it was the "Doug Nash" 5 speed... I think they did market a race box. The gears were cut with less of a helix to be stronger. More of a crashbox than a smoothie.

Doug Nash did indeed build race only 5 speeds, but I don't know if Richmond continued that or stayed with the street stuff???

Could you be asking about the Richmond Road Race 5-Speed? To Quote Richmond's catalog: "This transmission features NASCAR proven road race style brass and a steel billet front bearing retainer for strength. Available in a wide variety of ratios . . . . ." the street 5-Speeds have a very limited selection of ratios.

I was thinking of what Dave Bates was stating... I am one of those that bought a Richmond Road Race 5-speed from G-Force last year... A little better parts selection, but very similar to the street version

I was wondering if the race tranny could be driven on the street. This info is being asked in case I come across one and the price is right. It would be fun to cruise back roads rowing the gears. Sorry about repling so late.

Dave, Absolutely! The "Road Race" transmissions a lot of the folks here at Team Chevelle acquired from G-Force are perfectly reliable on the street. I've put more miles on the El Camino this year than any other year I've owned it. The 3.04:1 first gear of the ROD 5-speed coupled with the 3.07 rear gears blows the previous M-22/3.73 combo out of the water.

Thanks for the replies! The present 700R4 is a nice setup, however boring. We will see what the future throws my way.

Why not try a Tremec 3550 TKO 5 speed?
Fortes and several other vendors sell them ready to bolt in. Only mods would be moving the crossmember and shortening the driveshaft. If you already have a TH700r4, then the driveshaft will most likely be the correct length.
Think of this; 3.27 first gear, 525ft/lb torque capacity and .68 or .83 5 th gear.
Internal shift mechanism allows it to fit with out cutting up the floor.

Maliburacer - I am aware of the termec tranny's and I am considering them as a option when the $$$ situation says go. You do not see the used termec tranny for sale very often. thanks for the input.
