I have seen previous posts where this 11" bell housing is compatable with the 621. I just found this web site with photo's that show another version modified for the 78+ A body with the pivot ball location "lowered".
Just a heads up for e-bay buyers.

Rene,
That is correct. The 697 housing has kind of a "double" boss for locating the ball stud. Otherwise, it is essentially identical to a 621 housing. I personally have never seen a 697 housing with the ball stud at the lower location, but obviously there were some.
With the ball stud located at the higher position, it is 100% interchangeable with the 621 housing. I have VERY closely compared the two side by side, and I can find absolutely no other difference except this double boss.

I have one of these bellhousings with the casting #464697,I just pulled it off my big block to have a look at the stud position. It has the ball stud in the upper position, also it has 621 cast on the lower stud boss.

The bell for the 78-81 A Bodies will have "697" cast into the boss. Those are my pix (of the 464697 bell) on Marc Hichen's website-a very informative, nicely set-up site IMO. This picture is actually inverted so you can read the #:

Yes I must agree that Marc Hichen's web site is very informative, below you will find a bite of information I found on his web site:

Beware: There are two versions each of casting 462606, 464697, and 469697. The casting number alone is not enough to positively identify a suitable bellhousing. When investigating bellhousings bearing these casting numbers, the location of the ballstud and the number cast onto the inside of the clutch fork ballstud boss is critical to locating the appropriate bellhousing. When the ballstud on casting 462606 is in the upper position, it is equivalent to older casting 3840383 and will have 383 cast onto the inside clutch fork ballstud boss. When the clutch fork ballstud on casting 464697 or 469697 is in the upper position, they are equivalent to older casting 3899621 and will have 621 cast onto the inside clutch fork ballstud boss.
