turbo 400 wont stop leaking

hi i recently put a turbo 400 in my 67 chevelle bb with nitrous. i had it built at a local tranny shop, it keeps leaking i checked the pan gasket not coming from there i look up looks like its coming from the lines so i take the old metal tubing lines off replaced them with braided lines with AN fittings still leaking. i wrapped the lines with a rab where they screw into the tranny its dry so its coming from somewhere else. i cant stand this leak any suggestions on where it can be coming from an what to try. ps its leaking on the passenger side only. im running b&m trick shift fluid. thanks

Re: turbo 400 wont stop leaking

you wont want to hear this but if its coming out from near the fittings the case is cracked , someone either tightened them too much and cracked the casing rite around where the fittings go in. when you pull the fittings out it will be hard to see maybe its on the top of the fitting area ...... dont ask me how I know

car isn't running.

The o-ring is a common leak source. I once had a difficult to locate leak that turned out to be a poorly welded support tab on the dipstick tube. The fluid leaked through a pinhole in the tube where the tab was attached to it. It didn't leak when the engine was running, the fluid level rises up the tube when not running.

If you suspect the vent tube, try pushing a length of rubber hose over the vent and route it to a different area. Wipe the tranny dry with a rag, and drive it awhile to see if the leak exits the rubber hose at its' new location. If it is leaking out the vent, and the tranny isn't overfilled, it's time to revisit the builder.

Re: turbo 400 wont stop leaking

As stated above, I'd be thinking dipstick tube. The rubber o-ring from the factory is just useless, IMHO. I went with a Hughes dipstick tube, which has a tophat design rubber seal, absolutely no leaks.

Re: turbo 400 wont stop leaking

Take a rubber hose and attach it to the vent. Tie a soda can under the trans mount and route the hose to the can. See if the can fills. I chased everything in my car until I did this. Mine comes out of the vent. I never noticed it with the trans blanket, but with the shield the car was a mess.

Re: turbo 400 wont stop leaking

could it be the pan-if a stock pan, just like stamped valve covers, it can get bent with to much torq on the bolts, bends it in, then you have to knock it flat
spray some brake cleaner and clean it off, then you have to watch for the leak
you just have to look hard

I had this issue with my nova. Turned out it was the o ring, must have cut it when installing it. I fixed it for good during the summer. I put a M-21 muncie in place of it. jim

Re: turbo 400 wont stop leaking

If the vent has been become pinched during installation, or something else is clogging the vent, it will spew out the fill tube..........ask me how i know.................

Re: turbo 400 wont stop leaking

Could be shift shift seal or speedo cable drive connector too. Speedo cable drive has both inner and outer seals.
