I think there is a o ring in it, I know my 4 speed speedo cable had one.

Remove the speedometer gear housing (bullet) and there should be an o-ring on the outside ,pull the gear out and there may be another inside.
Replacing both should cure the leak.

there is a small bolt and a kinda metal retainer tab that hold the speedo bullet in the tranny (the end of the cable with the speedo drive gear). ther eis an o ring on that bullet. it will leak if that o ring is bad.

There's a little seal inside of that gear drive housing, those will make a nice mess if they need to be replaced. My 70 Monte was leaking there, couldn't find the right seal so I bought the whole assembly from the dealer. It comes with a seal in it, no more leaks.
