Computer keeps going offline ?

One computer keeps going offline every 5-10 minutes or so (I haven't actually timed it) as if it's on a timer and has to be restarted to get back online.

I don't know if one of the kids changed some setting or what happened to make it start doing that.

It's on my home network on my wireless router but is connected with a Cat5 cable and as far as I know none of the other 5 computers have a problem.

Running XP Pro and using Firefox on a somewhat older machine.

Have any ideas?

TIA

Broadband connection?
Start / Settings / Control Panel /Network Connections / under Broadband select properties -see what the idle timer is set to.

allow PC to turn off network card to save power.
right click my computer>properties click the hardware tab click on device manager. Find the network card under network adapters. Right click on it and select properties. Click the power management tab un check the box net to allow my computer to turn off the device to save power.

Re: Computer keeps going offline ?

Couldn't find any "idle timer setting" but I tried unchecking the box "allow computer to turn off device to save power"
Didn't help

Re: Computer keeps going offline ?

hmm, that's a thought.

I seem to have some kind of problems with every computer that I put at that desk.
Maybe the mice have been chewing on that cable.
Cable runs above the basement ceiling and through the garage.
I think maybe I'll go get a wireless card and try that after I try switching ports.

Re: Computer keeps going offline ?

I pulled another network card from another machine and put it in but that didn't help.
Also tried buying a new wireless adapter thingy, still no change.

I think I know how to fix the old E-machine now.
Set it over in the corner with the other 8 dead ones and buy a new (used-reloaded) 2.8 GHZ for 78.00

gotta take a load of them to the scrap yard.

Re: Computer keeps going offline ?

It wouldn't happen to be a Linksys wireless router would it?

Can you plug directly into the cable/dsl modem and does the same thing happen? If not then it is your router. Seems to be a common problem with Linksys devices. Next time try unplugging the power from the router, count to 10 and plug it back in. That works at my house
