My speedometer needle starting shaking last week on my '68 SS and as of yesterday neither the speedometer or odometer is working. Looking for suggestions on where to begin the troubleshooting.
I agree, check the speedo cable first to see if it has snapped.
If not, you should check the gears in the speedo itself. The easiest way is to pull one end of the speedo cable out of the transmission and use a drill to spin the cable. If your speedo needle moves, your speedo gear is good and you should focus on the gear in the transmission.
The speedo gear in the transmission is usually located on the side of the tailshaft housing (where the speedo cable inserts into the transmission). In many cases the gears are plastic and can fail when they get older.
