Package Tray Install

I've attempted to install a new package tray in my 1970 Chevelle Malibu. I'm restoring the interior (not the headliner or sail panels). When I bought the car, there was no stock package tray but a carpet covered plywood panel. So, I do not have a guide on how to re-install a new one. I've installed new jute insulation but the package tray seems too wide for the area. I see there are (what I've learned are called 'earmuffs' on each side of the panel.) Do the sail panels have to be removed? Do those earmuffed sections install under the sail panels? If so, can they be removed and reinstalled without damaging them for re-install? Do I need to remove the molding strip that goes across the bottom of the rear glass also, or can I simply tuck the package tray underneath. I've already ruined a standard tray but have decided on the mesh tray with the speaker openings. They are more expensive and I do not want to ruin another one. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Package Tray Install

Remove the sail panels and the rear panel under the window. Fold the 'ear muffs' up and reinstall sail panels and rear panel. Use a spray type adhesive to hold the vinyl strip down that goes behind the rear seat.

Re: Package Tray Install

I've never removed the sail panels. Do they come out with damaging them? I appreciate your help.

Re: Package Tray Install

You my have to trim the package tray to fit on the sides. I put a new tray in my 70 last summer and had to trim the edges. The package try was made by REM, don't know who else makes them.
