Is this crank snout ruined?

I had to pull the balencer off my 8.1 and this is how it looks. Is this ok or is this ruined?

Re: Is this crank snout ruined?

First of all, did you cut the notch n the front of it ???? Have never seen anything like that.

Not ruined but you will need to pull the front cover and use a fine file to get rid of the raised metal where the damper was dragging when you removed it. I would probably replace the damper. You might be able to get in there with a sanding roll on a die grinder and get rid of the deep scars and the raised areas but I would be leery of it.

Before you put on a new damper, you need to measure the crank snout with an accurate micrometer, then take the micrometer and the damper to a good machine shop and have them check the press fit on a Sunnen rod gauge. They can hone the damper to get the proper press fit which on a big block is only .001"

So the notch holds it in place?

Re: Is this crank snout ruined?

I don't know why they notch the 8.1 crank but the balencer is just press fit. When my buddy puts blowers on these blocks they have to have the crank keyed. But n/a this seems to be fine. I'm just not sure if it is going to weaken it or throw the balence off.

Very interesting, I have not seen one yet. I have done a couple of sets of heads but no bottom ends.

Re: Is this crank snout ruined?

If there's no key way what positions the damper accurately on the crankshaft so the timing mark is in the right spot. Looks like there are some more smaller gouges in other areas of the crank. You also have a path for oil seepage between the crank and damper now too.

Re: Is this crank snout ruined?

The 8.1 uses LS style reluctor wheel on the back of crank for timing.

Those big marks almost look like electrical arc marks.

Re: Is this crank snout ruined?

I just talked to Larry at Raylar and he told me that this is common with these and I just need to polish it down and that it needs to have some antiseize on it when re installed.

Re: Is this crank snout ruined?

^ balancer probably needs a hone as well. BillK's advice is spot-on - measure it and reinstall with correct dimensions/clearance.

Re: Is this crank snout ruined?

I appreciate the advice on that. I will do that. I ordered a new balencer. I need a different one. The one I took off was from a workhorse 8.1 and the a/c is mounted to high to clear the hood. Also the workhorse brackets stick out further. I ordered brackets and balencer from a siverado. They fit closer to the block and the a/c is mounted down low on the pass side and has Its own belt. It will also be nice to have the same systems on all my 8.1s so all the part numbers will be the same.

Re: Is this crank snout ruined?

My balancer came loose a few years ago and chewed up the end of the crank. Probably similar to yours. I filed off the rough edges, installed a harmonic balancer thinking it might reduce possibility of any vibration, a little anti seize and away we go. Have put on several thousand miles with no issues, no vibration. But always conscious that it could fail anytime.
Mind you I am running a stock 327 and not overworking things. If it fails I will get my spare rebuilt and drop that in

Re: Is this crank snout ruined?

I'm just going to run it. I have a spare 8.1 but if this engine craps out I will just pick up a Raylar 540 crate motor.

I would run it. It appears like it was possibly made that way to hold a supercharger pulley or something on it. I would run it. Polish it up and no pulkey. It's press so your golden... my 1st car was a geo tracker when I was 15 I bought new light underdrive pulley (before i really underdtood things fully) and it ruined my crank snout... so I emory cloth the hell out of it and I cut up A sprite can to go all the way around crank snout tapped pulley on with hammer and it went for a another year or 2. I then held throttle to floor until It blew. I put a 4.3 vortec and manual trans... never worked property many problems it's sucked so I trashed it again not enough no how and no help had minimal tool's and money.
