Best way to get 500 hp and 500 tq from 406 sbc

Not looking to go "cheap" but at the same time would like to get the bang for the buck . What parts would you use / whatever will work ? Thanks.

Re: Best way to get 500 hp and 500 tq from 406 sbc

N/A will require a good 210cc head and a healthy solid roller cam. It's a lot of bang for the buck, but if you're wanting to cut corners and save a few bucks, you won't hit the goal. 500 horses/ft-lbs is not playing around. Although- you can hit those marks without any trick machine work or exotic porting...so that's pretty cool.

Follow my recipe and you'll make it for sure. It's quite a few bucks, but a LOT of bang..

What are your goals and budget for the engine? Running power brakes/steering etc? What cam style?

Many ways to make the power, but at what price and streetable is another thing...

I designed/built those 2 engines with the same basic recipe. If you use the same components on your 406, you'll make similar (if not better) numbers. That's why I offered up the link.

Of course you could make those kinds of numbers pretty easily without using anything exotic at all by starting with a 454 or larger BBC.

It's not too hard with the N/A SB either! Swapping over to a BBC adds weight to the nose and expense to the wallet. But yes, a 454 can make 500/500 pretty easily. A 502/502 can do it with a factory warranty too...but that's not what he asked about!!

Just offering other options and perspectives........

A big block with aluminum heads and intake weighs about the same as an iron small block.

Re: Best way to get 500 hp and 500 tq from 406 sbc

Well I would certainly like to go big block but I have this 406 already . I wouldnt be opposed to the bug block but the parts tend to.be more expensive . I really don't care what kind of cam setup I run but I do plan to be mostly a weekend driver on the street. Maybe I want too much .

Re: Best way to get 500 hp and 500 tq from 406 sbc

My engine is very similar to the one in the article and is a 406. Same exact AFR heads and my cam is almost the exact same size too, except a Lunati (pn 60133). I have 11" of vaccum at idle and it pulls to about 6700 with the single plane. Torque peak is around 4600 rpms. I do have slightly higher compression, 10.25, and it runs without detonation at 37 deg total with 93 octane. I have not had this one on an engine dyno, just a chassis, but it did 438 rwtq/402 rwhp with an RPM Airgap intake and 437 rwtq/428 rwhp with a ported Super Victor. Even if you just figure in 20% drivetrain loss, you can do the math.

I think you could probably get close to that if you used a hyd roller too. When I went from a flat hyd to a solid roller, the biggest difference was the lower RPM torque went way way up.

You should be able to do what you want with off the shelf parts pretty easily. You are not asking too much at all.

Re: Best way to get 500 hp and 500 tq from 406 sbc

.060 over 817 block, 750dp, VicJr, AFR210, HEI dizzy with MSD parts. Crower hyd roller, -18cc dish KB Hyper pistons 9.3-1 compression (87oct gas!!!) 5.7 GM rods, Scatt 9000 series crank. 500hp 512tq all in buy 5,500. Verry easy now days with good heads and cams.

I had the block, rods, and pistons The heads were used, off a sprint car and needed guids. The shop I was working at had a wholesale account with Crower, thus a complete Crower valve train. Cam, lifters, push rods, rockers. I could have re-used the stock crank, but the cost of a Scatt 9000 series is hard to beat. I probably have about 3 grand total in this build, and it rocks!!!

And now with Craigslist, E-Bay, RacingJunk, etc, etc, etc, You can find much more parts thay you could about 10 years ago when I built mine. Good luck, and have fun!!!

Thank you. That's exactly what I was hoping to get when I asked this question .
