Trouble priming SBC oil pump?

I am having trouble priming the oil pump/system on my 388. I've tried 2 different primer rods [both with the cam galley plug to pressurize everything] and they both won't work. I can feel the primer indexing into the oil pump rod, but as soon as I start the drill it pops out. The pump turns fine, and it started to fill the tube for the oil pressure gauge slowly as it was barely turning. Any ideas?

You need a pretty husky drill to prime the pump...I use a Milwaukee 1/2" and it gets warm...

Re: Trouble priming SBC oil pump?

The jumping out makes it sound like the primer rod isn't fully engaged into the pump. If properly engaged it should stay put.

Measure your distributor from bottom of mounting base to tip to get a measurement how far the primer rod should extend down when it engages the oil pump shaft. Then make sure the primer rod extends down that same dimension when you try it again.

Apply more downward force. I have primed with a DeWalt XRP 18V cordless before. Is the intake on already?

Re: Trouble priming SBC oil pump?

Yes the intake is on. I had this problem before with the intake off. I had assembled the engine and forgotten the rod that connects the oil pump to the distributor. So when I was turning the engine setting valves I took a oil pump primer rod that doesn't have the cam galley plug and primed the pump, it worked fine. I had tried using the rods with the galley plugs and they did the same thing they are doing now, jumping out and not spinning the pump. Now the rods are indexing something different [the oil pump rod that connects the pump to the distrib, I installed it finally] and they are doing the same thing. I guess I'll have to measure the connections and see whats different, I was just hoping someone had run into this before.

I welded a nut to the top of my priming tool and use my pneumatic impact to turn it.

I can see using an air ratchet to drive it, but doesn't an impact gun shock the pump some once pressure builds?

I've been using a 14 volt cordless drill with a 1/2" chuck which works pretty good.

I use a gutted distributor. You can drop it in and lock it down. Works great. You need to spin the crank in 90* intervals to prime it properly.

Re: Trouble priming SBC oil pump?

Found the problem guys. Both primer rods that have the cam galley plugs have too big of a blade to index the slot in the oil pump rod. The primer rod with no oil galley plug works fine and has a smaller blade. Guess I'll just have to shave the other primer rods blade down.

Re: Trouble priming SBC oil pump?

something wrong there. the size of the bottom of the dist hasn't chamged since 1955. When you installed the oil pump driveshaft did you drop it down from the top or pull the pan and pump and do it from the bottom?

Re: Trouble priming SBC oil pump?

Tom- I dropped the pan and pulled the pump. Heres a couple pics. The one on the left works fine as the engine sits right now, pumps oil and doesn't jump off of the oil shaft. It doesn't pump oil the the cam and valvetrain so it doesn't do me a lot of good before Im ready to start the engine. I don't know if you can really tell from the cell phone pic but the blades are different sizes and you can easily see the difference in person.
