396 oil filter leak

guys,

have a serious leak problem in my engine. We just rebuild it, everything is normal when put oil and start to load the tappets.. but when the engine start for the first time lots of oli come out from oil filter. and the leak happens just when we star the engine.

I change the filter for other brand, same thing, leak...
I change the oil filter adapter and still leak...
I change the rubber from oil filter for a taller one, for more grip.. still leak
I drain all oil, thake the oil pan out to check if the oil pump valve itīs ok, and itīs fine!
Iīm using a new Sealed Power Z2244153 - Sealed Power High Volume Oil Pumps
I donīt no what is going on, should i change the oil pump for a standar volume?
note the pic 6070 the oil filter is crooked a little to left, that happens in the last try.. the pressure was about 20 PSI at gauge. the engine start and at the same tame we have to turn it of because of oil leak.

thx
Giorgio

You sure it's not running down from that compression fitting above?

Re: 396 oil filter leak

It looks crooked to me I would remove the adaptor from the block to see if there is something stopping it from sitting flat on the block. Make sure the filter is not hitting the bolts on the adaptor.

Re: 396 oil filter leak

I have an old 1966 396 block. there are a couple of different styles of adapters available and neither worked for me. I ended up just sticking with the old canister style filter. makes a mess but you get a new oring seal with every filter and it hold about another quart of oil.

Re: 396 oil filter leak

Is your block supposed to use the canister type filter? If so, I think you need one of these adapters. It can be seen in this picture.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong...it's happened before.

65 to 67 blocks need a canister to spin on adapter, otherwise there is nothing for the o-ring to seat on. You need something like this if it's one of the earlier blocks: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TRD-1024/

x3... check the year of your block. i think these guys are 100% right. my 396 has the same adapter, & it's a non bypass, with zero leaks. the newer one will not work.
