350 TDC Problem, Harmonic balancer marking seems to be off. HELP

I recently began a valve adjustment and I pulled the 1# plug. Once I felt air i i looked at the marking on the Harmonic Balancer and it was in the 9-10 O'Clock position. I am wondering if the balancer could have been installed wrong from the previous owner. The #6 cylinder does the same thing. I dont want to tear the motor apart, but I want to ensure I am doing it right. Is there a way of finding TDC for #1 w/o using the marking on the balancer??

I realized everything was off when I adjusted them according to the Balancer and it backfired through the carb.

Welcome to TC.
Sure is.
You'll need a piston stop similar to the one in the link.
Here are the links that address finding TDC.

Working now.
Don't know that it times out but if it does ,select 'search' up in the header and enter 'finding TDC'.

i made a piston stop out of a spark plug with all the guts knocked out and a 3/8" bolt with the head ground off to a nice round head into it so i don't ding the piston.
cost to make the tool- 0$
time to make the tool- about 5 minutes.

Have you had the distributor out? If so make sure your distributor is not 180 degrees out of phase and your plug wires are in the correct order. This is a very easy mistake to make.

Re: 350 TDC Problem, Harmonic balancer marking seems to be off. HELP

I have not removed the distributor however it does not line up with #1 location on the cap when the marker on Balancer is at (TDC). The car ran ok before I made adjustments to the valves.

When I feel the air in the plug #1 the balancer does not align, however if I continue to rotate it to the mark it no longer pushes air. I would say I no longer feel the force of air at 11-12 o'clock and the 0 marking is @ 2 o'clock. Shouldnt I feel air @ TDC???

Dan,

You generally will not feel any air much past the point that you are. You can cut a piece of metal coat hanger wire and stick it into the plug hole and watch it as you turn the engine by hand. When it stops moving up, you are pretty darn close to tdc.

By the way, you do not need to find top dead center to adjust the valves. Do a search here on EOIC valve adjustment. That is the most accurate way to do it, especially if the cam is not stock.

Another note!! When the TDC marking on balancer is at 0 the Distributor rotor is a little past the 8th cylinder marking on distributor cap. I get pretty bad backfire when I run it,and it dies out once I take my foot off the pedal.

Re: 350 TDC Problem, Harmonic balancer marking seems to be off. HELP

I will definitely do the EOIC method! My other concern is that my Distributor rotor is in the wrong location. I will still need to find TDC correct??? If so then I am back to square one.

Can I just adjust the distributor without needing to know TDC. Do it by retarding or advancing?? I have never adjusted Dist. Timing before

Re: 350 TDC Problem, Harmonic balancer marking seems to be off. HELP

Rotor can be anywhere as long as it point's to the #1 wire when #1's supposed to fire.
You might still want to verify that the TDC mark is actually TDC for timing purposes.
