454 casting 10068286 any good?

It's a Mark IV 1990 motor, has been remanf by GM:.030 over mains & rods .010. I don't have head #'s but guy wants $500. Runs good out of an 87 doully.

Looking to build a nice street motor, no racing, good low end torque.

Seems like a good base?

4-bolt main block, 30/10 crank is OK, probably has thumb rods in it.
$500 is 'decent' but we get better deals here in Western WA.

I wouldnt hesitate to pay $500 for a motor I can drop right in a car and run.
I havent seen 4 bolt main bare blocks sell for anything less than $500

How many miles since the rebuild? Seems like a pretty good deal for around here. I wish I was in western Washington state. Maybe I will have to go and visit the wife's relatives again out there.

I don't know, the truck had 87k on it so I guess something less that that since it's not the original engne.

Brian, why don't you pull the 502, crate it up and send it to someone (like Mark) and have him "fix" it and breathe some life in it while there. Electric pump aside, there are options available now for a quieter electric pump.

Mark, if you check back in, he's dealing with a GenV 502 HO that has been an oil burner and had valve taps from day one. Motor needs to be bored, decked, balanced, heads mod'd and cam/lifters replaced and oil system examined.

Mark,

From what I found poking around the internet, it's a high nickel content 4 bolt.

What don't you like about that block?

Thanks

Mark,

I will take your advice then. I saw in one of your posts somewhere that you prefer the 512, 289, 959, 445 blocks. is that still the case?

Thanks

A decent '512 block is going to set you back some serious $$$$... The '289 blocks are plentiful and cheap.

Most of the early 454s you find will be 2 bolt main motors. Nothing wrong with that but if you are set on using a 4 bolt main motor, look for a 445 casting. Many are 2 bolt but some that were in 3/4 ton trucks or Surburbans had the 4 bolt mains. They made the 445 up through 1989 so it's not uncommon to see one at your local junk yard. I have seen Mark Jones (Vortecpro) build some killer motors out of a 445 base and with the newly discovered power peanut port heads can make .................... it makes those 80s vintage 445 cores look even better.
