Cost of parts is the cost of parts, just depends on how radical you want to get with compression and cam. Can easily get 500HP.

Re: 454 bored to 496

And FYI ,you need to bore & Stroke to get 496".
Bore is usually 4.31" and stroke is 4.25" compared to the stock 4.25" bore & 4.00" stroke

Re: 454 bored to 496

You should have some good heads to start with. If you're going for a strong street toy, you can reuse your rods, get a cast stroker crank and pistons and you'll probably be fine. If you want to wail on it, you'll have to step up to the good stuff. There's a wide range of budgets from used parts to top-end stuff.

Re: 454 bored to 496

At the risk of stating the obvious, 496 is about 9.25% larger than 454, so you stand to make about 9.25% more power, all else being equal. The question becomes, does the money spent for the stroker kit give you more bang for the buck than spending the money elsewhere?

I guess that depends on what you are starting with, what your goal is. Another question would be whether or not you are considering nitrous or a supercharger.

I guess I would say starting with a stock engine, you would probably gain the most from heads and intake. Unless the engine needs a rebuild anyway.

Then if you are going to spend the money, a stroker kit would end up costing about the same amount as a normal rebuild - roughly. If you need to bore it, use new pistons anyway and the crank needs to be turned, the gain from the stroker kit would be well worth it.

Re: 454 bored to 496

fwiw....I have a new 496 in my chevelle. it is a bored, stroked and clearanced (6.385 rods) 427 4bolt main block. I run edelbrock op heads. comp cam solid ft xs-290-10 cam.... 10.7:1 cr...makes 607 hp @6100 rpm.....627 ft/lb @ 4500 rpm.....has turned my 67ss("396") into a real beast that needs much larger rear trires.....go for it - and especially so if you need a new crank....you wil not be disapointed...

Re: 454 bored to 496

On my 454 core, the crank & pistons were junk, so...pretty much just as cheap to stroke it to 496 as it would have been to build a 468.

Re: 454 bored to 496

Curious as to why most shoot for 496 when a .030" overbore 489 leaves some wiggle room down the road with a seasoned oem block. What if your sonic check does not allow more than 4.310" bore.Seems like the 4.280" would have one more serious build left in it before scrapping the vintage iron.

Re: 454 bored to 496

Mine wouldn't clean up at .030. Had to go .060. I think most 454's can safely go to .100, based on what I read on these forums, but I'm no expert.

Re: 454 bored to 496

many, many 454s have already been punched .030" over hence the popularity of 496s at .060" over.

Re: 454 bored to 496

Im not a used piston guy either but what about your crank makes it "Junk"? If your new before deciding on how much CID you need first determine what kind of power you desire. You claimed your 73 block was 300 hp and 390 tq. You dont have to stroke a 454 to easily achieve 500hp and 500 ft lbs and can all be done with a stock crank. Whats the motor going into, what kind of diriving wiht the car see, what trans etc etc. Need the whole picture to detrmine what is going to be your best bang for the buck.
