Cool Long vs. short water pump on big block 454

Hey Folks,

I have no idea if I have a long water pump or a short one. What's the easiest or best way to distiguish the difference? I'm in need of an altenator bracket for some pulleys I ordered over two years ago. I'd check the invoice of that order but it was an online order and hence the info is now gone.

Thanks,

Bob

Re: Long vs. short water pump on big block 454

A long pump will have some space between it & the timing chain cover (enough to put your fingers between)

a short WP will not

Re: Long vs. short water pump on big block 454

about a 95% chance you have a long water pump.
As far as I know, only the 70-74 454 Vette and some trucks had the short water pump.

How to ID?
the short waterpump's backside is nearly touching the timing cover
long waterpump has a gap of approximately .60"...you can get the end of your finger between the timing cover and the back of the WP

Since You Have A 70 Chevelle In Your Sig and you stated you recently Ordered The W/pump For your 70 Chevelle BBC It Will Automatically Be by application A Long Pump because the bbc Used The Long Pumps From 69 & Up In Full Size Pass Cars.

Re: Long vs. short water pump on big block 454

yes Gibbons, you are correct.
The question was 454 so 1970 SS hotrodded in posters info is what were're going by
and as you know, 1st 454 was in the 70 model

Re: Long vs. short water pump on big block 454

if the backing plate nearly touches the timing chain cover , it's a short water pump . if their's a larger space , roughly big enough to slide your hand in between the timing chain cover and water pump , it's a long water pump .

Smile Re: Long vs. short water pump on big block 454

Wow I'm impressed by all the responses. There is a gap between timing cover and water pump. The 454 I'm using is from a 1978 truck for those who were wondering. Thank you for all your help. You've made my day.
