Who's running a 283 eng? Are you happy with the performance?

I'm a 66 Chevelle 396 SS guy and mabey a 65 Chev II owner also. Here's the question: This Nova ( non-SS ) has a 283 mildly hopped up with a Turbo 350 trans. This Sport Coupe is immaculate, no rust, new RED paint, new RED interior with a freshly rebuilt 283 and a Edelbrock Intake with Carb. It's a light car so i'm thinking the small block with the Turbo will be enough for driving around town, highway and cruises...Any comments? How many are happy with there 283's or disappointed..?

It really depends on what you want it for. It sounds like a good fit if you will be using it for driving around town and cruising. My Chevelle has a bone stock 283 and it runs great! However I am treating this projects as a restoration / cruiser rather than a hot rod drag car. With your 66 396 and the 65 283, it sounds like you will have the best of both worlds...

Imho, the old 195 and 220hp/283's are dandy little engines!!

The 195 is the 2-barrel carb/single exhaust engine and the 220 is the 4-barrel, duals Power Pack engine.

You install no more than an old STOCK Duntov, solid lifter cam in a Power Pack 283 engine and it will really COOK!!

My first car was a new 283 automatic '66 Beaumont. The engine was more than willing but the PG killed it. Naive farm kid not wise to the musclecar scene yet. My buddies bought new 275 hp 327 Chevelles and could get 3-4 mpg better than I could on the highway. I even installed a new Carter AVS carb and intake. Still 20 mpg (Imperial) was my best. I didn't know much about carbs and distributors back then so mileage probably could have been improved with a little tuning. Just being a small block Chevy speaks for itself. In a light Chevy II it should perform very nicely.

Back in the early 70s I had a 64 chevelle ss with a 283. Performance was ok, even with a powerglide. It was bored to 301 and had a bunch of other stuff done to it. All it was capable of was pushing it down the 1/4 mile at 13 seconds flat at 104 mph. And yes this was my daily driver, not a race car.

Re: Who's running a 283 eng? Are you happy with the performance?

I have a std bore 283 block I've been saving for years with the intent of slapping a set of 11:1 pistons into with 305 58cc heads and a 327/375 hp cam I have laying around just to see how it will run. I don't expect it will have torque like my BB, but boy will it scream, and being a small block and I have most the pieces already, I could do it on the cheap.

13 seconds flat is not bad -- that's in the neighborhood of an LS2 Corvette.

The 283 will do fine in a 65 Chevy II or a Chevelle but IMHO I would change it to a 4 speed (much more fun in a DD). I'm now running a 283 (bored to a 301), fuelie heads (worked), a radical cam (292) a 4 barrel Holley and HEI ignition in my 65 Malibu SS. I runs very strong and sounds great (a little heavy on the gas though).

Re: Who's running a 283 eng? Are you happy with the performance?

I'm beginning to think from your replys, that a freshly souped up 283 with a four barrel would be enough power in a light 65 chevy II with a Turbo 350. The car only weighs 2650 so hopefully it should be fine ripping around town or on the turnpike. Not as much torque as my 396 but not as much weight either since I have a Convertible. I do like the 65 Body Style and believe it's the next collectible car down the road, but who knows..

Re: Who's running a 283 eng? Are you happy with the performance?

I had a 66 Chevelle back in the old days with a 195 hp 2 bbl 283, muncie 4 spd and 3.7 gears. It was a blast.

I have an original un-opened 67 283 sitting on a crate, ready for rebuild.
