I realize that rim size & backspacing and tire sizes is a question that is over-asked, but in most of the searching I've done in this forum I've mainly seen rear rims/tires covered. If fronts are covered, it's usually someone wanting to know how big.
What size & backspacing rim and tire do you like to run on the front of a street-strip car? And while I'm at it, the same question for the rear? My car is a 1970 El Camino, and I want to run as much rear tire as possible without jacking the car up; and for the front I was thinking about something fairly narrow (but not frontrunners). I'm kind of leaning towards Weld Drag Stars or Cragar Street Stars (I think I've got that right). From my searching it sounds like the rear should be a 15x10 w/ 5.5" backspace - correct? How about the front? Thanks in advance for your help.

You and me both. I've also posted this in Chevelle Tech 2002, due to crummy response over here. Today I emailed Weld & Cragar for their input, I'll keep you posted. There is alot of info in the TC archives, too.

My good buddy's '72 Elco runs a 235/60/15, on a 15x8 with 4.5'' backspacing in the front. On the rear, he has (according to him) a 15x8 with 5.5'' backspacing, and a 10'' Micky Thompson Sportsman "I" radial. He had to crimp the rear wheel well lips and the tire still barely rubs on big dips in the road. It hooks up like a dream though concidering he's running a 502 and 3.73 Eaton Brute-Force. I had a 15x8 with 5.5'' on my '70 'Velle with just 255/60s on it and the rim rubbed the shock mount, so I don't know if 5.5'' BS is exactally right, but it may work good for Elky's. I'm currently running the 5.5'' BS rim on my Nova with no problems. Hope some of this may help.

I've also heard the 15x10 with 5.5'' is the right combo for big tires in the rear, but this has mostly been reported on Chevelles. My buddys Elco looks alot different as far as "what-would-fit" kind of stuff compared to the 'Velle. I would look at something like a 235/60 for the front. We've run them on 'Velles, Elcos, and Novas and they're a kick ass tire for the front. Plenty wide for handling, but not too wide to rub. As previously mentioned, I think 4.5'' BS is the right spacing for a 15x8 run with 235/60s but double check with a wheel supplier. Sorry I didn't post this sooner, I thought the Elky owners would chime in. Hope some of this helps.

[EDIT]: BTW&lt; I run Weld Draglites, my buddy runs Weld Rodlites, and I think Weld Pro Stars are probably one of the baddest-ass rims out there. They look trick on everything from a Velle/Elky/Nova and more. Good luck.

I tried a 15x8 with 4" bs and a 265/50x15 on the front of my brother inlaws 70 chevelle with no problem,looked so bitchen! Handled like a go-kart with 15x10&295/50's on the rear.

Thanks alot, guys. I've also talked to TC'er "KAA", who is running Pro-Stars 15x10 w/5.5 BS & 295/50-15 Radial TA's on his '70 Elky, and he says he has no trouble with rubbing after he trimmed his wheel-well moldings a little - they stick out about 1/4" further than the wheel-well lips. I agree about those Pro Stars, they are wicked looking. Thanks, guys.

Here is a copy of Weld's reply to my question at the top:

Any test fits we have done show a 15x8 with a 4.5 backspacing, you will
have to do some measuring to make sure that a 5.5 backspacing will not
rub on anything under the car. also make sure that a 10"wide will not
stick outside of the fender well. if you are going to drive this car on
the road then i would stay with at least a 15x5 for the front. tire
fitments for the 10"wide rim on the rear range anywhere from 265/50/15 up
to 325/50/15 depends on how tall you can fit under there. the front
tires depends on what you use on the back, so you can keep them the same
highth. i would check with your local tire dealer for the tire fitment.

Here is the reply I received from Cragar in regards to the above question. Interestingly enough, the return email address from the Cragar rep was to Weld Racing. I guess Cragar must be owned by Weld?

Hello,
Your 15x10 at 5.5 back will work with a little engineering. You will
need to determine the tire size and use it to engineer the fit. The wheel
itself will be a bolt on.

In the front you could run a 15x5, but a 15x6 is a lot safer on a nose
heavy vehicle like an El Camino. The back space would be 3.5 with
either.

The Drag Star or Superlite II would be good style choices.

70Bowtie, what is the tire/rim size combination you're running on your Nova? I'm also working on a '68 Nova, so I'm curious. Also, did you roll the lip or notch the frame-side of the wheelwell? Thanks.

I'm running Weld Draglites, both rims are 15x8. Front tire is 235/60 with 4.5'' backspacing and it works great. The rear is 255/60 with 5.5'' backspacing and it fits great also. Its the biggest tire I've ever seen run in the back of a stock Nova (although I have HD suspen, it really doesn't change ride height). The 5.5'' BS rears didn't fit good at all on the Chevelle and rubbed the inside of the rim a little on the shock mount. The 5.5'' rears actaully work great on the Nova they are pretty close to the shock mount and they look like they're pretty tight all around but nothing rubs. I pushed down on the backside of the car with some friends pretty hard and the tire didn't rub at all. As far as the tire rubbing on the wheel lip, its farther away from it then it was on the Chevelle and it keeps the tire well away from rubbing. I pretty happy with the combo.
