Help Me Identify 700r4 L460 or L460E, See Pictures

OK guys, I have acquired what I was told is a built up 700r4, however I checked the numbers on the passenger side of the tranny and there is no (M) in the series. Is this correct?

My numbers are 3YK172N.

I read for it to be a 700r4 there has to be an (M) in the number.

I know the pan has 16 bolts, what do I have a 700r4, L460 OR L460E?

Please help.

Bell Housing has the number MD8

MD8 = TRANSMISSION, AUTO 4 SPD, THM 700 R4


82-85 doesn't have the M.

MD8 correlates to a 700R4/4L60, a M30 would be a 4L60E. I don't think they used the same case, GM catalog shows a different part number from a 91 (700R4) to a 93 (4L60E). They use the same pan.

I do know that if it is a 700R4 that you should make sure that it has the 31 spline input shaft. I had one come with a project of mine, and it ended up being the 26 spline. Long story short, everyone I talked to said not even to waste the money on a new torque convertor, because the 26 spline 700R4's are very unreliable, and gave the 700 a bad name.

Mike is right, pull the torque convertor and take some pics of the input shaft, that will tell what spline you have. From the pics, it appears the unit is a 82 to 86 model trans.

Also if it has the 26 spline input shaft, then it will probably have the weak sprags also. The transmission could be updated with the better pump, input drum and sprags, but you would probably be better off getting an 87-up core to build.

I have the same question about my 700R4. I pulled off the code: 7YPM049H

All I can tell from this is that it was built in 1987 (Feb 18th if my Julian dates are correct), on the second shift. Can anyone tell me what the "YPM" stands for?

Not that it matters, since it's 2 years later but the YP is the model and configuration that it went into and the M means that it is a 700R4. As a sidetone it's not an early one because those only have a 2 letter code that always ends in M.
