Hey Dale, Thanks, any idea on that date code? He thinks it's off a 1988ish LS6 crate engine.

Have you found out about Flywheel part # 3973457, I have same flywheel behind 1974 454 (not factory stock) and have vibration, could be pressure plate out of balance but I want to know what I own, Thank you ART.

Re: Flywheel decoding help?

This is strange.. I too have a flywheel (it's definitely off a 454, from the balance weight), but it was from a 1992 454 Gen V.

I should mention, mine has an "N", so the casting actually says 3978457N

here is a pic of mine.

Re: Flywheel decoding help?

While doing some research on 454 flywheels, I found that there are two different part # for the flywheels. Apparently, there is a difference between the Gen V forged, and Gen V cast crank flywheels!

So perhaps that explains why Chevy suggested a different flywheel for my 454 HO, than the stock truck 454 flywheel I have in the pic.

Re: Flywheel decoding help?

Both numbers come up as 454/LS5

E 1 8
E - May
1 - 1st day
8 - year. probably 68, could be 78 as they used the same flywheel in trucks.
