1964 L79??

Hi All. My computer illiterate buddy just bought a gorgeous '64 SS. Long story short, a good friend remembered the car from the 60's, (it's factory red with a painted silver top-easy to remember) and thought that it was a late '64 with an L79. I've never heard of such a thing in '64........The car is real stock with the exception of the 400 small block that's in it now. It is a 4sp, tach, console, 12 bolt car though.......Any input? I thought maybe the L79 had a larger fuel line or some kind of evidence. Thanks in advance!

Re: 1964 L79??

Well, the L79 didn't even make it into the '65 Chevelle line until well after the beginning of the model year so I don't see how a '64 could have gotten an L79 from the factory. In fact, the L79 wasn't even produced in the '64 model year, not even for the Corvette.

There were rumors about the L76 being installed in '64 Chevelles in small numbers, but I'll believe it when someone comes up with a legit car that can be proven to be a real L76 car. I DO believe they INTENDED to build such a beast in '64, I just don't believe they every actually did release any to the public.

Crawl under that 64 and see if it's a 12 bolt. If it is, look on the axle tube a see if you can make out the numbers and letters stamped on it. Post 'em back here if it's a twelve bolt.

Just ridin' around. Wanna get in?

Re: 1964 L79??

What was the L76? If it was the 350 hp or 365 hp, I know a guy that has a 64, that came with either a 350 hp or 365hp 327. I probably can get him to get me the numbers and possibly some pics of them. Also, wasn't 10 bolts only offered in 64? I think Alan Colvin books shows 65 being the first year for a 12 bolt in the chevelles, unless they were late year production. Maybe someone with a little more knowledge will know this answer.

The L76 was the 365 HP 327 with the solid lifter "30/30" cam. To my knowledge, it was only installed in the Corvettes.

Re: 1964 L79??

12 bolt was first introduced in 65. The 64 upper adjustable arms will not fit the 12 bolt or even the 10 bolt from 65 to 72.

Yes, get the information from your friend's car and photos too and post them back here in this forum. Would be interested to see what he's got.

I've been told that some '64s got out with 12-bolts but I'd like to see one for myself to know for sure. If anyone can post codes off of a 12-bolt that's under a '64 that is suspected of being original to that car it sure would be helpful.

1963 corvette was the last year for the 340 hp 327 the difference being the carb and cam they are identical. Please tell me what you think was available in the corvette line?
Im very interested in hearing this.

A 365 hp 327 in 64 had a single line and a solid lift cam known as a 30-30

The 327s available in the '64 Corvette line were:

-250hp
-300hp
-365hp
-375hp

There was no 350hp version (L79) available that year.

Re: 1964 L79??

The only 327s known to have been installed in 64s were done late in the year. 250HP 327s starting in about March and 300HP 327s not until about June. Not very many of the 300HP engines were installed.

62 Corvette 327/360HP (original RF engine and Fuel Injection) (future restoration project)

66 Corvair (Kelmark mid-engine conversion) (project, basic conversion complete, needs restoration)
