3931063....68-69...oval..CLOSED..396, 402, 427, 101cc chamber
3969854....396.......69......2 or 4 bolt
3969854....402.......70-72...2 or 4 bolt

The "pad" number, pass side front will get you an answer. I'm guessing by date of casting its a '70 402 325 HP.

I thought they quit making the 325 hp version in 70? It gained an extra 5 hp?

A-29 is Jan 29, check for the 3 digit alphabetical code on the front pad forward of right cylinder head.

Re: 3969854 Hi perf??? What is it?

I had 325HP in my response. 325 / 330, what I meant was the LOW HP version. The most common one. Actually I didn't even know that they gave a '70 another 5HP. Still the same 'entry level' big block engine.

Re: 3969854 Hi perf??? What is it?

Yeah in 1970 The 396 came as a 330 hp version, a 350 hp and a 370 hp version.

Also even though they all had the same bore and stroke they called the 330 hp version the 402, the other two they still called the 396.

The LS3 330hp wasn't used in the SS but was available in the Malibu although the GM Restoration Kit doesn't show it. A gentleman sometime back had photos of a 70 Malibu convertible with the LS3 option. No chrome dressup kit on the engine and front fenders had '400' emblems. Pretty car!

Is there a site to confirm how many 3969854 were produced and or by year?
Here is some info on the block Date code B-3-70 Suffix code CKO.
Different sites say as follows:

Used in all 402 applications. Block has 'short tower' distributor boss and casting date is found on top of bellhousing flange near casting number.
Tips & Warnings
If the engine identification numbers read 3969854 or 3955272, the engine is considered a 396/402.
