Rearend Decode?

I know it's a 12-bolt, but not sure from what.

Looks like the housing is #3968038

Re: Rearend Decode?

I know one thing, the number of the casing is 3959038, it may appear as 3958038 but it is not and this would be a 1969 housing. go to www.chevellestuff.com then click "decoding" then rear and you can scroll down and see what I am stating. The TEI does not show as anything but the 0526K means the date stamped likely was 05=may 26 =26th and K =Mc kinnon plant. I am not a expert on these things so please do not take my word 100% , you may want to check it yourself or have one of the more knowledgable Guys on this forum check it out for you. GOOD LUCK --- BOB

Re: Rearend Decode?

I got my numbers a little confused here , YOU SAID IT LOOKS LIKE 3968038 and I meant to state that a 69 rear is 3959038 --- I stand corrected, Got myself a little twisted up on that ! BOB

Re: Rearend Decode?

I'm not sure what you mean by left axle tube, but if you mean driver's side, that's not where my 12 bolt is marked. My 12 bolt decoded "CI" from a 66-68 Chevelle. It is marked on the passenger side axle tube, on the driveshaft/pinion side of the tube. Mine was pretty difficult to see, as the stamping was no where near as deep a stamping as the one pictured here. I had to use a 220 girt sandpaper , then wash it with thinner to find the marks. It was early on after I bought this 72 parts car, and before I popped the cover. Pleasant surprise- decoded as a 3:73 gear with posi-traction- verified later after opening it up. Very happy to put it in my 71!
