71454Chevelle's T56 Magnum install

Hey guy's, I wanted to post this for my brother Darren since we've completed his T56 magnum install. It wasn't as bad as we first thought it was going to be. Before we did anything we checked driveline angle to see what we had starting out with. Next he pulled the motor and installed his new Center Force DFX clutch and New Quick Time bellhousing, and he did some other things to the motor while it was out. Got the motor back in, headers on, cooling system done, all wiring complete, now we're ready for the tranny. We cut the trans hump out and we used an engine hoist to help pick it, (akward and heavy). Once in place we tried to use the new crossmember he bought but it wasn't going to work out at all, wouldn't work with the exhaust and there was alot of transmission movement up and down,(springy). So we used his 4 speed crossmember and modified it, it worked perfect. Driveline angle was dead on. Next we had to modify the exhaust, the X pipe was hitting the crossmember because the crossmember now moved back about 6", so we lengthen between the headers and the X pipe and shorten between the X pipe and mufflers. I finished welding the exhaust up and put in an exhaust bung for his wide band thingy, (can't remember the full name )He got the driveshaft shortened and installed, finished everything up and now it's ready for a test drive. It was amazing how well everything worked on this thing, there was absolutely no issues with anything. Now for the floor, we used a trans hump patch panel that he bought and modified it to fit. I made the hump removeable so if he ever had to get into the shifter plate he wouldn't have to drop the trans, just pull up the carpet and remove the hump. I have alot of pics of this install from start to finished floor, hopefully Darren will post some pics of the finished product with carpet and seats installed. This transmission in my opinion totally changed the way his car drives. He can get it into 6th gear doing 60 MPH and it does very well, a very slight surge at that speed, but just ease the throttle a little bit and it cleans right up. The T56 magnum is a great shifting trans. Sorry for the loooooong winded post. Jeff

Mark..............No console, which probably made this install a lot simpler.

Vince............Driveline angle ended up around 2.5 degrees down. Zero vibrations, the fastest I driven this so far (at a constant speed ) is 85mph and all was well.

Re: 71454Chevelle's T56 Magnum install

Darren, so what's the cruise rpm/mph in OD? Having that extra gear IMO is the game-changer when it comes to getting this motors to cruise good.

Thanks Gene. I could not have done this swap without my brother Jeff. He's a very good fabricator and a perfectionist.

Vince,

I'm so glad I went with this tranny over the TKO. With the 2 overdrive gears, its very versatile which really helps with my setup. As you know I'm running a 4.30 rear gear with 30 inch diameter tires. I can start using 5th (.80 ratio) around 45mph. At this speed I'm turning a little over 1700 rpm. Every now and then I will get a very slight surge at this speed, speed up 1 or 2 mph and it goes away. 6th gear ( .63 ratio) can happen about 55mph (which is about 1650 rpm) and once again at a constant speed at this mph I will have a faint surge. By 60 mph (around 1800 rpm) its gone. 65 mph is 2k rpm. 70 mph is a little over 2100 rpm 80 mph is 2400. This thing is beautiful. The one thing that really surprises me about this setup is I didn't think my motor would like the low rpms in over drive. With a cam duration of 256 intake and 264 exhaust on a 108 lsa, I thought the OD gears (even 5th) would not be usable until higher speeds (well over 2k rpm). I was pleasantly surprise how well it works. Another surprise is the DFX clutch. IMO, its very streetable. Every now and then it will chatter a "little", but I can easily tailor my driving style to avoid it (slip it a little more).

Also as far as shifting goes this thing is awesome. Very short throws and very crisp. I thought I knew what a good shifting transmission was. My old Super T-10 had some modifications to the syncos performed by S-K Speed and shifted very well but it wont hold a candle to the T-56. My RPM shifting is a non-issue also. I have not done any speed shifting yet, but 6500+ rpm shifts (even 2nd to 3rd) were perfect.

Again, I'll try and get some additional photos posted soon.

Very cool Darren. Did you go with a hydraulic or mechanical t/o bearing?

Nice to see another person install a Magnum, different approach than me, slightly more professional .

I love these transmissions though, big and heavy but amazing.

You'll find that very light throttle is where you get the surge, and just a little bit of gas clears it away. Kind of annoying if your just trying to maintain speed. But again having that extra gear will allow you to keep the rpms in a better spot. Now, could you imagine that trans w/o the .80 gear? I live that dream every day
