after 4+ years the engine is in (racing time)

Hey guys, I thought I would start a new thread here.. the old one that has a lot of posts and it is hard to follow...

almost in the 11s

So, my friend and I were able to drop the engine in Fri evening...it looked good until I couldn't bolt up the trans crossmember. It appears to be the trans shield (CSR shield) contacting the trans tunnel floor at the rear, so I will have to drop the trans and create some space. I first want to buy a trans jack as I am tired of the rickety setup I have now...there is one on sale ($149.) at Princess Auto (kind of like Harbor Freight)

Hey thanks guys! Hey Greg, nope it is not Steve B, it is a friend from high school (I have known him for like 25+ years)..

Yes, the trans jack will make it easier. I will put up some pics of the rickety setup I am using lol...I am going the P-auto tonight and buying that trans jack, it is on sale and I would like it so it is meant to be...lol

I am hoping on Saturday I can get going again...

Hoping for a low 7's or high 6's in the 1/8, I have a Freakshow converter as well!

Very nice. The Freakshow converter and glide are now gone. It served me well. Car ran good for what it was, lots of fun on the street too.

Right on, I have heard a lot of good things about Freakshow and the price is right! We will see how it works soon hopefully!

Re: after 4+ years the engine is in (racing time)

Hey guys, I spent a few hours Sunday on removing the trans and "clearancing" the trans tunnel floor but it didn't change the misalignment..I can get the cross member bolts in but the trans mount to trans doesn't line up. If you look the trans is "cocked" to one side..I recall when I installed the "mock block" without the shield no such problems existed..So I think it is the shield...the engine mounts also appear to be within spec..
I think the next step would be to drop the trans again (but using the trans jack it makes the job so much easier!) and remove the shield and see how it fits. I might just leave the shield off for now and go with a trans blanket which would work better..

Re: after 4+ years the engine is in (racing time)

this may sound dumb but did you check to make sure the engine mounts are on the correct sides? I had that problem with my 66 and it turned out I had the solid mounts that go on the block on the wrong sides shifted the trans off center.

Re: after 4+ years the engine is in (racing time)

You should be able to take the cap off the distributor and just lower the rear of the trans down and slide the shield out without having to take the transmission out.

Re: after 4+ years the engine is in (racing time)

Thanks guys,
Jeff, I was wondering that? I do have the Moroso solids, I think they are part # 62510...there wasn't any L or R side markings on the mounts from what I remember..I can call Moroso today and find out..I just phoned Moroso and on this unit no lefty or righty...I think for the 70-72 crowd of Chev A bodies for the 350/454's the pads are the same..the 307's had different pads..

Good point Ray actually the distributor is off, the shield is attached with 4 of the 6 bolts so I could just leave the 2 on the bottom on and slide the shield out..

Re: after 4+ years the engine is in (racing time)

Hey guys, I removed the trans shield and no change...I am thinking that there is a inherent misalignment in in the body and frame and it is exposed even more when you use a straight solid mount with no give...I am going to re-install the poly mount/rubber mount setup I had before or maybe even use the 1/4 spacer from the poly mount kit. I am thinking that the way the trans is sitting in the tunnel right now I should use the stock rubber mount (it seems thicker therefore pushing the engine over) on the driver side and the poly on the passenger side..If this works I might run a chain setup or spherical ball to limit the engine movement...

Re: after 4+ years the engine is in (racing time)

Kris try swapping the mounts side to side first I know they say either side but that is how I fixed mine and it worked.

Re: after 4+ years the engine is in (racing time)

I remember a long while back you should not use a poly mount on trans if you are running solid motor mounts.Something needs to give and I would rather have the trans move than break as that has happened to me once.Stock rubber for trans, solid motor mts.
