Looking at a "Pro Street" rotating assembly from Competition Products for my 489 Engine Project. It basically has a cast steel crank, steel rods, and forged flat top pistons (also rings and bearings). Cost is $1150 which sounds very reasonable.
Are these decent quality assemblies from CP or should I go with Scat or Eagle? My power target is around 550'ish HP and 600 TQ.
i would look for a scat rotating assy.
or a eagle rotating assy.
with the same brand rods as crank.
is this going to be a balanced or unbalanced assembly?
will the clearances be checked to insure proper assembly and machining?
i think they have some good deals - but i would stay away from the off-brand/no.name cranks & rods that are offered in the bottom dollar kits>
just remember BOB WEST's old combo, went 323 passes no problem with cast steel crankie
had "a little problem" the next pass....BOOM!
hmmm, forged flattops, hmmmm, what cc heads
George, heads are 063 oval ports with 101 cc semi-closed chambers. Should be at 9.5 CR with an .039 head gasket and flat top pistons (-3cc with single valve relief).
If I remember correctly, Bob West had well north of 550 hp in is car.
Is there something wrong with the current rotating assembly or do you just have a bare block? block needs boring?
A stroker crank will add some torque to the situation but in terms of peak HP a 4" crank will be pretty close with most combos in the 550 hp range.
Bob, I have a bare 454 block along with bare 063 closed chamber oval port heads bought some time ago just for this engine project. Since I needed a new rotating assembly I opted to go with a 4.25" crank/long rod assembly to get extra power over a standard 4" assembly. I also wanted to use flat top pistons with the 063 heads to get a reasonable pump gas 9.5 CR.
This stroker engine will replace the 408 BBC in my 67 Chevelle and will be a street car only. I'll also change out the 4:10 gears to more street friendly gears (3.42 or 3:31's).
