Question SBC vs BBC mpg

If you had a 500hp SBC and a 500 hp BBC, which would yeild a better gas mileage in the same car? my 383 is a pig on gas and im just wondering how much worse the BBC cars are suffering at the gas pump

Re: SBC vs BBC mpg

My 550HP BBC is a total pig. In my '69 completely stock equipped with TH400 and 3.73gears, I would estimate 7 or 8 MPG.

500hp 427 BB turbo 400 3.73 gears and I got 12-13 on the hwy running 65mph. Need to tune your carb for a lean cruise and mileage will go up.

Re: SBC vs BBC mpg

barring the use of nitrous or a supercharger/turbocharger, a smaller engine will have to rev higher to make that kind of power, so the car would probably have deeper gears.. i'd think it would be a wash..

Re: SBC vs BBC mpg

Just recently got 15.9mpg at 60mph. 1964 Chevelle SW with stock lo-comp 454 with QJet/TH400/3.08 rear/4100lbs with me in it. Same car with 283/3spd got 19.3 on the same round trip.
Runs 10.2s at 136mph with 28# in the DRs. OK, just kidding about that last part.

Re: SBC vs BBC mpg

355ci ported 1.94-1.60's 601 casting 305ho heads flattops and a solid cam 252 @.050 and .536" lift ground on a 106LS 411 gears 29" tall hoosier dirt track tires in a 76 chevy truck with a huricane intake and 800DP holley

half cruising for mileage and half doing burnouts and shifting early at 7500rpm
3.75MPG!!!!! OH well turning 11's in the 1/4 makes up for it

I vote for the BBC to win the mileage..only because 500hp with bigger cubes is easy with a more mileage friendly cam...106LS aint good for mileage..I say 110 would produce more MPG

Yip! im looking at both options....that is much cheaper than a built 4L80E with a compushift controller from what I have researched..being that I already have a built TH400 as well.

Re: SBC vs BBC mpg

IF a GearVendors or a 4L80 could double gas mileage (big IF I'm sure) and I allowed $3000 in budget for either unit, how many years would I have to drive it to break even? Too many of us get jacked up on the latest Slick Magazine engine, tranny, go-fast, corner better, brake quicker, please others gizmo that we fail to enjoy however things are at the moment.
How many miles a year do most of us put on our cars anyway?
I'd say build what you want, drive it all you want, spend the $$ on gas---and at the end of life (yours or the car) you'll only be a few hunnert in the hole.

Re: SBC vs BBC mpg

Amazingly enough mine gets about 9mpg with 4.11 gears and a 3500 stall, that's about 4 more mpg than I expected, did you really build a hot rod for gas milage?

Re: SBC vs BBC mpg

I would think a BB would get better just because a small block at 500hp would be a more radical build. Saying that my 427 BBC gets probably around 11~14 mpg cruising and 5~7 playing around. This is with a 4spd and 355 gear.
