Twisted Axle

After posting on here about my wheel stud size problems,I pulled my axles out today to send them to Moser for redrilling for bigger studs. On the axle that I broke the wheel studs on,the splines are twisted.I'm running a spool and these were 30 spline Moser axles. Why would one axle twist like that?I thought the spool would put traction down equally.Thanks.

Re: Twisted Axle

Doug the variables would be track surface, tires and suspension. The spool may deliver equal power to the axles but what happens after that depends on those three items.

Whichever side is twisted that's the side that's carrying the load at launch, usually that indicates an unequal suspension/tire loading issue...Dave

Re: Twisted Axle

I did,and they said it was because of the hard hitting stick. They then tried to sell me a $625 upgrade new spool and axle package, told me it would probably happen again,if I didn't.Told them I'd have to think about that.

Davey,it was the driver side twisted, both slicks equal tire pressure with airbags in the coils.5 psi in driver side,25 psi in passenger side.Thought that's what was recommended.Should I put more air in the passenger side bag? Also, both rear shocks set on firm.

Re: Twisted Axle

Doug I believe it would typically be the drivers side on a A body car. Unless the chassis tune is dead on the pass side tends to "give up" making the driver side take the load. Stiffer right spring, shock setting or more air pressure in a bag would help. I still don't have mine prefected either, makes you appreciate the guys that do around here. I've had some improvement by also bringing the tires into play with independent pressures. However that's a band aid for more tuning necessary. I also am playing with different shock settings left vs right.

^^^ there's a great point right there Doug. I can feel the stress/bind just making the turnout at the end of a run, didn't ask if your trying to street a spool....

Re: Twisted Axle

What clutch do you have? If you look back, guys with sticks always ran a lot more gear than an automatic. Ratio of stick cars has dropped considerably for just the same reasons you are seeing.

Re: Twisted Axle

Basically Dave hit it right on. Natural tendency is for the car to plant the driver side tire harder. This axle has been hit over and over and over and it is twisted. DOES NOT mean it happened on that pass. My dad's wagon used to do it regularly. Generally every other season an axle was twisted. It would not be a bad idea to upgrade to 33 spline with the stick and all the weight.

Re: Twisted Axle

I am running a Ram diaphram clutch, nothing exotic.Very, very little street use,if so,usually just trying someting out.I'll just have to keep an eye on it,very simple to check with c-clip eliminators. Thanks guys.

Thumbs up Re: Twisted Axle

I had similiar problems with my lower powered 327(420horse) 5 speed combo Doug. I have masterline mark williams 9.90 rated 30 spline axles with ram 3000#diaphram and rag disk.Twisted driver side axle also. I see you run HD powergrip sintered disk with ram 3000# plate?Just wonder if that disk plate combo is not giving enough slip at launch and tires dead hooking here and there are hurting you . I feel that is what happened in my combo. I do think you should consider 33 spline.I have a higher powered 400 in my nova that now has a slipper Hyatt clutch and will most likely get 33 splines in future.Have you broken any parts other than spline twist?I think with your weight and torque it will need one or the other. later, Al

Your right on with everything,Al,esp.the hooking here and there.I do have the Ram powergrip HD sintered disc, and I am planning on upgrading everything, including a better slipper clutch,as the budget allows. As hard as I am on this truck, the wheel studs and the axle, has been the first damage in over 2 years of really beating on it.I'm surprised I haven't torn anything else up,as I realize the battle with physics I am fighting, with heavy car and stick. What Hyatt clutch do you have, and about how much would something like that cost,if I can ask?
