Oil pan to header clearance

What's the minimum recommended?

The headers have one primary tube on the driver's side that bends towards the oil pan. It is fine witrh a stock pan, but it will hit with a kickout pan such as the Milodon 30950.

I ran this pan in the past with a hammered in dimple to clear the pipe.
I may need to go back to a pan like that with the new 496, I don't think the stock replacement pan is ideal.
This time I ould cut and weld the pan for clearance, looking for how much room I should give between the primary tube and the pan.

Put header wrap on that area and call it a day.

Or you can use a bit of sticky backed heat shield tape on the oil pan

I think that I'd dimple the offending header tube before I'd dimple the oil pan. It's a high air turbulence area, so with plenty of air passing by there, it doesn't need a wide gap between the pan and header tube in order to avoid heating up the oil more than it gets ordinarily.

I can't dimple the header tube enough, there is too much interference.
The dent it pounded into the pan last time was quite large, not some little dimple.

I can't use header wrap or other insulators, it's right below the oil filter so it gets oil dumped on it every time the filter is removed.

Milodon offers some real good pans which offer a good amount of clearences just about everywhere. I think you should take a look on their website, and shop for a better pan. Because it's either that, or you have some very poor fitting headers there. On my 632 motor, I have 2 1/8" diameter primary tubes and 3.5" diameter collectors on my headers, and they aren't even custom pieces, and with the 8 quart pan I had and the present 6 quart pan I have on the motor, I never had an issue with the header tubes being close to the pans. And both of them are kicked out. seems to me that you can find a more suitable oil pan.

Any oil pan with a kickout on the driver's side will most likely need to be modified for clearance. I have no strong preference for any model # or manufacturer, I mentioned the Milodon 30950 because I used that one before and know the problem.

It's no big deal to cut and weld a new oil pan, I was just looking for suggestions on how much clearance to give between the two.

The headers fit fine. They are Doug Thorleys I bought in 1991 and have been running since then. they were designed to clear a stock chassis and a stock oil pan, which they do quite well.

Not so. My Moroso 20403 clears my Hooker 2455's just fine, many people here running that setup...

Were there kickout pans back then?

If I had Hooker 2455's than I would agree with you.

I have different headers, and they have a primary tube routing that's a little different.

There's the problem. Those headers you have. But to answer your question, I would think that .500"-1.0" daylight is all you need. Like I've previously stated, alot of air gets at it when the car is moving, and it isn't like it's the first 8" of the primary tube closest to the cylinder exhaust port either, so I doubt that it's getting as hot at that point as it does right near the heads.

Sounds like you need to scrap those old headers...

I don't need new headers, that would cost money.
They are in great shape and have a fresh ceramic coating.

Modifying an oil pan (that I allready need to buy) will incur no additional cost.

Why not go with the stock configuration Moroso pan 20449, clears a 4.25 stroker, and holds an extra quart to boot at 5 quarts. You can see it HERE.

I have the Milodon version of that pan, 5 qt factory replacement.
Until I get the shortblock together, I don't know if it will clear.

The other issue (with the milodon stock replacement) is there is no way to fit a windage screen in there.
It was nearly impossible with a 396, I doubt it will have room with the extra 1/2" stroke.

If that pan doesn't work, I was leaning towards Moroso 19401

The 20403 has the built in scraper and windage screen. It is what I have on my 496.
