Difference between self aligning and non-self aligning roller rockers?

Hey guys, how can you tell the difference between self aligning roller rockers and non-self aligning roller rockers for a SBC just by looking at them?

I know the difference in application, but need to know the difference in looks.

Re: Difference between self aligning and non-self aligning roller rock

SA rockers have little sort of ridges or "rails" on the tip, on either side of where they fit over the valve stem, which is what locates them to the valve. Roller ones might have that as a feature of the casting, or they might have washers on the ends of the tip roller.

The ones I have seen have a raised ridge on each side of the tip roller. The roller is a little wider and the edges have a raised ridge to keep it centered on the valve tip.

I suppose Self Aligning Rockers would be OK on heads without Push Rod Guides and used with Hydraulic Lifters. I think they would propose problems when Adjusting Lash on Mechanical Cams and use with Lash Caps.

You definately do not want to use self aligners with guide plates. One or the other, but not both.

If you happen to run a Self Align Rocker on a head without guide plates, youwill want to pay close attention to anywhere the pushrod may bind.

Re: Difference between self aligning and non-self aligning roller rock

Anyone have a picture of a SA roller rocker and a non-SA roller rocker to show the difference?

Pics are kind of unnecessary; from the description, you'll know.

Smooth tip or roller = original style

Ridges or washers at ends of rollers, or roller looks like a spool (sorry, forgot about that variant) = SA

Trust me, it's obvious.

Self aligning rocker arm.

Edit-As a side note that is a new GM rocker arm, priced at 55 dollars on summit for the budget minded vortec ite's.

$55 x 16 = $880 a set!!!! For stock rubber crap!!!!! What are they thinking?

You could buy 2 sets of Comp or Crower stainless roller ones for that, and have money left over for some valve covers.

55 dollars for a set of 16! I thought it was quite a deal, as the scrap yard was wanting 30 for used.

Re: Difference between self aligning and non-self aligning roller rock

Oh... not as bad, but $55 is still about $60 more than they're worth, in a high-performance situation.

Even after spending money you'd still have nothing but a bunch of stock rubber crap. Not much point in that when you can get the same trash at the junkyard for a couple of cents a pound... and rockers don't weigh much.

Re: Difference between self aligning and non-self aligning roller rock

Ok im not sure what your getting at here, for the budget minded stockish build. There is not one thing wrong with these rockers for that application. If your using basically stock vortecs, i dont see the need to upgrade to the newest wizbang rocker arms. Now if your building a high performance oriented motor, then i dont see why youd be choosing vortecs for your platform to start from anyways. Let alone throwing even more money at them in fancy rockers, intake, etc...Would be money well spent getting ahold of tony.

But the subject of this thread was the difference between the two types of rockers. So im not sure if you have a severe problem with GM self aligning rocker arms, or you just felt the need/wanted to lash out at someone.
