Lewis Racing Engines

Does anyone have a big block from Lewis Racing Engines. I have seen their name on some of your Sig's. Just curious about quality, good or bad testimonials.

I have my eye on a 540 from Shafiroff racing. With the complete motor, 950 carb, hyd roller cam, fuel pump, MSD ignition etc., it runs about 715hp and 675 tq for about $13,500. They offer a 2 yr warranty and free shipping, which is a big plus for me.

With the current economy, work has slowed down a bit and I'm looking for somethin' a little less expensive. Lewis Racing Engines seems to be a prominent name around here so I thought I should look into it.

Let me know what you think of them.

Re: Lewis Racing Engines

You'll likely hear nothing but good about him on this site. I have no personal experience but I've read many very happy customers posts.

Why is it we never have time or money to do it the right way in the beginning but we always have time and money to do it over again?

Re: Lewis Racing Engines

I have a 548 that Mike Lewis built for me. I am very happy with my purchase. No issues at all. Quality and attention to detail is what I wanted most when I was planning on forking over a sizeable chunk of cash. I felt that is what I recieved. I havent blown it up yet!

Re: Lewis Racing Engines

Mike is good people! I've bought a fair amount of parts from him over the years. As far as a complete turnkey deal goes, not sure he'd be cheaper than Shafiroff or any of the other mass producers. I've never seen him claim to be the cheapest. However, it is worth your time to let him put together a quote. If you go with him, you can be sure you'll have a better piece than what's available from the mass producers.

Re: Lewis Racing Engines

Never bought an engine from him but I would never hesitate to! He is one of a few builders I would actually buy a complete engine from.

He uses PROVEN name brands and he doesn't pressure you into buying from him. I recently asked him for help and instead of being the typical salesperson and pressure me to just have him build me an engine, he offered to "build the engine, build the shortblock, do the machine work, or just sell the parts." That is extremely rare to find a shop so helpful!

No SS here! Proud owner of a 1971 Malibu 454.

Re: Lewis Racing Engines

Machine work and balancing will be spot on not production line tolerances. He's kinda anal about that. There are different price ranges in parts you will need to select your quality level, pro stock quality or pump gas street quality. But either way

Re: Lewis Racing Engines

he's the only guy I use as far as machine work, and he's 3.5 hours from me. If a friend wants an engine assembled by me then he gets the parts and machining from Mike, so I know it'll be right when I assemble it. I have assemble three engines in the last couple years for friends, all with Mikes work, and all without causing me stress when assembling. I have wasted so much time and money on bad machine work in the past, it is very nice to have someone you can trust to do it right. Additionally, his pricing is very good from what I've seen.

Now, I just need him to get into the LS world.................

Re: Lewis Racing Engines

He's one of the top builders here, not sure if he'll be less expensive. At least it will be top quality though.
