Shafiroff 540

Well i just gave them a rang today to check about getting a 540 shortblock.

Talked with a really nice guy there. I'm pricing everthing out and it's getting to be pretty close to their shortblock price of $4700(it's about $700 more to get the shortblock ready to go from them). Free Freight.

Figured it was going to be @ $4k for block, rotating assmbly, bearings, rings. I'd also have to assemble it, which I don't mind plus freight.

What to do.....hmm.... a week and half build time if I order today.

I have been looking at the blower short blocks and they look like a good deal. Free freight!!! its the freight that can kill you.

Re: Shafiroff 540

If you want to assemble it, Carl (CNC) has a pretty good deal on prepped Dart Blocks. Drop in a balanced rotating assembly and your there.

Re: Shafiroff 540

I did the same math and came to the same conclusion...Shafiroff could build one cheaper than I could do it myself. They were easy to work with, used quality components and I would highly recommend them. Mine was built on a Merlin III block and they claimed it would handle 1000HP if I chose to add nitrous. Check out the engine pics on my website.

Re: Shafiroff 540

I will second the Musi 555. I put one in my nova this year. Great people to deal with. You actually talk to Pat before and after the sale. I spec'd mine with upgraded rod bolts and hellfire rings. I put AFR 335's on it with a bullet solid roller and it runs bottom 10's on pump everypass, with a tight converter limited 1.53 60'. I sprayed it once this year with a mild tune 150 shot and it ran 9.72 @ 141. The only thing I am not comfortable with is the bearing clearances. Which they set at .0037. A llittle loose for my liking, would rather see .0032. But they set it there on purpose for nitrous use. So far no problems and the oil pressure is fine.

'69 Nova
Pump gas 555
9.84 @ 137.25 1.41 60'
9.45 @ 144 on a 125 shot

Re: Shafiroff 540

The Musi 555 short block, which uses a Dart Big M block, does seem like a good deal for $3800!

I was going to go with a ZZ502 short block for about $4400, and change the cam and lifters. I would also need to change the pan.

The Musi short block would need cam, lifters, (Don't know about cam bearings), timing set & cover, balancer, pointer, pan, pump, and pickup, but I would pick up 53 more cubes. It is also internally balanced. Plus I would probably bump up to an AFR 325 instead of my AFR 305 that I was going to use for the ZZ502.

I'm going to have to think on this for a day or two!

Of course I'll still use Mike Lewis for my other parts. I've bugged him enough that I feel I owe him some of my business.

Re: Shafiroff 540

I like the 555 from musiperformance with some upgrades. I bought the afrs 335s from mike and he is great to deal with. Now to pick a cam. I just got off the phone with them seem like great people to deal with.
