Unhappy My Holley is spewing gas.

Today I hooked the pcv up in the car. I went to start it, it ran for about 2 seconds and I gave it gas and it died. Now when I turn it over gas is GUSHING out a small tube that sticks up right behind the secondaries. Its a 1 year old holley 600, single inlet, vac. secondary. I just put it on my 327 and have drove it only a couple times. Would my rear float cause this? I have never set either float since I put on the new motor, but this just seems extreme. I hope someone has an answer.

There's probly a piece of trash stuck in the needle and seat.

Just loosen the screw and eyeball how far down it is to the top of the needle before you unscrew it. Take it out and blow it, make sure it flops freely. Then put it back fairly close to exactly where it was. Generally they are halfway down the nut. Put the screw in tight, turn your pump on and set it.

Re: My Holley is spewing gas.

First Guess: Needle 'n' seat not working properly. (just as described above)

Second Guess: O-ring on the needle 'n' seat assembly leaks. Had this happen a couple of times; no-one seems to remember that even if the needle completely seals on the seat--if the O-ring is bad the gas just bypasses the seat!

Holley does not sell o-rings separately; you either buy a needle and seat assembly; or you buy a gasket "kit". Either choice involves spending "about" 100 times the cost of an individual o-ring.

I bought a batch of Viton o-rings; I'm prepared for a lifetime's worth of O-ring issues.

One other possibility...float has a hole in it, filled up with fuel, and sank. Happened to me a few weeks ago.

Re: My Holley is spewing gas.

I had the same problem caused by the float actually falling off. There is a pin driven into a boss inside the bowl upon which the float pivots. This pin can fall out taking the float with it causing the needle valve to be left wide open. If cleaning the needle valve doesn't work, pull the bowl off and fix whatever problem you find (bad float, float fell off, etc.).

Also, your engine has now swallowed a lot of raw fuel. I'd suggest changing the oil before starting it up again. It also wouldn't hurt to squirt a little oil into each cylinder before starting it to make up for the oil that was likely washed off the cylinder walls by all that raw fuel.

Good point Rich. Additionally, it's probably a good idea to pull the spark plugs and spin the motor over a few times before re-installing. My engine actually locked up...a cylinder or cylinders filled up with raw fuel (which is non-compressable) preventing the motor from turning over with the starter. Fortunately, I realized what was happening and ceased trying to start the engine before it was damaged.

Re: My Holley is spewing gas.

I took the two things out of the bowls with the screw in them and cleaned them. Still is doing the same thing. I'm about ready to smash it and go quadrajet. I've had this holley a year and im not impressed. The Q-jet on my Trans am has never been touched in 28 years and works much better. I dont know what to do.

TAKE THE BOWL OFF AND SEE WHAT'S GOING ON INSIDE. It's very, very likely something simple but you'll have to take the bowl off to find out.

Re: My Holley is spewing gas.

Well got it working. Now my tranny is leaking and I can't keep oil from coming out around where the valve cover bolt holes are. I need to take a deep breath. I just about had enough.

Don't keep us in suspense, what did you do to fix the carb problem?
