Spark plug boot protectors

I have a couple of spark plug wire boots which are very close to the header tubes or may touch the tubes if the wires are left to hang loose. I may have to cut the plug wire boots off and replace them with 135 degree boots but I'm curious about spark plug boot protectors such as these:

Will these sleeves still protect the boot/wire if the sleeves are in direct contact with a hot header tube? My headers are ceramic coated (Hedman calls it a "thermal" coating) but I'm sure they will still be hot enough to burn a bare wire or boot. If these boot protectors are tough enough to resist occassional direct contact with a header tube I might go that route as opposed to chopping off the existing plug boots.

Re: Spark plug boot protectors

I've had no problem with them touching hot headers. Had them like this for a good 2 years now and the sleeve or boot don't look burned at all.....

Re: Spark plug boot protectors

Rich,

Same as what Trevor said. I have been using them for several years and have had no problems (no burning).

I recently installed a new/different set of headers (Hooker to Hedman) and a couple of the Hedmans tubes come closer than the Hookers did. I'll have to keep an eye on them.

Re: Spark plug boot protectors

They are fine unless you have the boot pressing the protector directly against the header. The protector will survive OK but the heat conducted to the boot is still enough to damage it. As long as you have 1/8" or more air gap you should be OK.

Re: Spark plug boot protectors

I use them and they work great, the only problem I ran into is over time it dries out the wire and it will start to crack.

This is exactly what happen to me. I had 2 boots on and both wires were adjusted to stay off header pipe. But one found its way onto the header. I don't how long it was there, a few days at least. The boot was brown in that area it touched the pipe, BUT the wire insulation was burnt badly..If anybodies wire boots are laying on the the header pipe check it out, the wire should be burn't from excessive heat transfer..
