pimple pops in paint

Paint gurus please chime in.I have developed tiny pop marks in my paint job that is a year and a half old, can this be a solvent releasing problem causing the paint to have tiny bumps in the paint? It appears to be happening more on the horizontal surfaces, quarter panel tops and now have seen a few on the fender tops but some on the sharp edges.Over 20 years to finally get it painted and this is the result Totally pissed. Please some input thank you.

I had that happen to a car about a year later it was little rust spots popping up probably moisture in the primer was trapped then painted over. I paid for that to so it hurt trice as bad.

They usually call that solvent pop.

Re: pimple pops in paint

If the primer was sprayed too thickly or too quickly without adequate drying between coats, that solvent needs to get out eventually. It makes bubbles and they pop.

Re: pimple pops in paint

Either way it is the shop fault. Unless...you did the prep work?
A year and a half later, should be interesting to see if the shop
stands behind their work? You got any type of warranty in writing?
I believe you already know the FIX

I wouldn't be in a hurry to have any fix performed, otherwise, you could have more of the same after the fix. Let it finish popping...

Re: pimple pops in paint

The proper fix is to bring the car down to bare metal and start over. The body shop fix will be to repair the affected areas.

Agreed, but my guess is that bare metal is not going to happen...

Shop is going to look at it and whatever it is is going to be fixed.I didn't do the prep so there accountable,if the bubbles are in the clearcoat could it not be sanded there is 5 coats of clear on the car I believe. And yes Nick your right about letting it finish popping.

Re: pimple pops in paint

What you going to do?
Let it finish popping for another year and a half...really! Not if it was my car.
As was said proper fix is back down to metal and start over or you may have
on going problem. I would be pizzed/bummed also.
Maybe to much clear to fast?

You figure this could go on for another couple years holy crap. Its going back to the shop and will have to see what they want to do I don't think bare metal is going to happen but the owner is a stand up guy and has agreed to fix whatever the problem is guess we will find out.

Re: pimple pops in paint

If it was solvent related you would have seen the results of that excess solvent gassing out as the paint was still wet/fresh, not some several years later.

Modern day urethane are fully cured within hours days not years later.

I have seen ONE paint job in my career that had bubbles in it. Car had suffered hail damage and the roof was "fixed" and repainted. Several months go by and the bubbles started to appear. We stripped the paint off the roof and the primer was still wet. The Einstein painter who repainted this thing screwed the mix ratio or used a completely wrong hardener.

Another possible thing could be is maybe they got to carried away with wet sanding and polishing and you have thin spots of clear. Being that you are seeing it on the horizontal areas and on the edges which take the brunt of the sun, those areas are starting to pop loose.

In my professional opinion, the only way to know for sure what it is is to take a spot down to bare metal.
