Satin black paint ??

I was at a car show in Fort Worth a few months ago and saw a car that appeared to be in black primer. I asked the owner if it was primer and he told me it was actually paint and that he had shot it himself. It looked great on his Hot Rod. Can anyone expand on what this paint may have been and any experience with it? It seems to me he said it was a kit he ordered online. I am considering shooting my '70 clone with this black when the time comes. The body is in grey urethane primer at this point.

Thanks guys....

Re: Satin black paint ??

He may have ordered it as a kit, but I'm pretty sure it was simply paint, whether single stage or clear, that had a flatner added.

Re: Satin black paint ??

John Deere ?? I'll look into it, thanks. That IS the look I want.

Your car looks great ! What rims are on the car ? I had envisioned that scenerio also i.e. black paint/rims. Are they NHRA/IHRA approved ?

Thanks for any additional input.

Re: Satin black paint ??

John,

The wheels are Cragar D windows, 15x7 up front and 15x8 out back. I've always liked the look of them, especially on a blacked out car like this one. I don't know if they are NHRA/IHRA approved though.

The paint is a tractor enamel, so its tough as nails, but it is by no means a conventional finish for a car. I wasn't building a show car, just a reliable daily driver that might see some racing, so I didn't want something too nice. Plus, it was my first paint job, so ease-of-use was a primary factor. All said, it has a nice smooth finish, and its not so flat that it looks like ratty primer.

This is the color I'm going to do on my 67 Chevelle. Found this a while back on the net, car is from Sweden if I remember correctly. If anyone wants the paint he used I can look it up for you if you want.

Re: Satin black paint ??

heck, use Eastwood underhood or chassis black. of all the stuff I used when I detailed the engine bay on the convertible years ago, that stuff is by far the toughest, more so than urethane, epoxy or POR.

While that car looks sweet, the photo looks doctored up to me.

Re: Satin black paint ??

I don't have a ton of experience with flats, satins, semi gloss, etc.... yada yada, but I have played with a few. The TCPGlobal seems to be the best bang for the buck to me. It has that "right sheen" which can be a very daunting game with flattening agents in clears. If you are just doing a quicky on it then just tint your primer. It seems the popular misconception is that the work under the satin paint does not need to be that nice and it will look fine... satin paint hides nothing.. just food for thought. Matt's car that is done in john deere blitz looks great in pics so maybe that is the way to go.

Re: Satin black paint ??

Here is more for you then...

The owner of this car is from sweden and this was listed as the paint he used...

Spies Hecker
Permacron Permacron
Autolack Auto Paint
Serie 257 Series 257
rallyeschwarz matt rally black matte
015 4451898 015 4451898
31791875 31791875

And the translated web site he used on this build. I don't know him, but that is one sexy looking car! I would like to finish my 67 Chevelle the way he did this camaro.
