Spray technique with HVLP vs LVHP

I've been using a Binks number 7 siphon type LVHP paint gun for 20 plus years and have decided to go with a new Sata HVLP gun. How much do I have to change my spraying technique? I know I have to experiment with it some but do I hold the gun closer? Go slower?
Any help appreciated.

Well, Since you have sprayed for 20 plus years you have the teqnique down, the only change your going to make is to how you set of your psi and fluid control on a SATA, compared to the #7 you've sprayed with for years...I spray basecoats at 17-22 psi and clearcoats at 21-25 psi...the transfer rate and efficiency of the HVLP guns is great, I do recommend a 1.5 on basecoats and the SATA RP for clearcoats, you may not like the way a regular SATA basecoat gun lays out clearcoats. Also take a look at the digital guns from SATA.

Make sure you've got a good supply of air, and high flow fittings without a cheater valve to take full advantage of the HVLP. Sata guns like lots of air.

I have a Binks 7 also (at least 20 years old and still works perfect). The 7 was virtually fool proof. When I shot the car last spring, the HVLP worked well but I did find that the clear did not flow out as smooth as I wanted. Ironically, it had more texture when applied drier than when applied wet. May be a function of the paint or the the switch to HVLP, but this was opposite of what I had been used to. In al fairness though, this was the first BC/CC job I had done, I pretty much had just sprayed enamel or SS in the past.
