Chevelle SS Restoration Guide...

Anyone have a copy of Paul Herd's Chevelle SS Restoration Guide? I'm just curious as to how much is really incorrect in this book. Anyone that has one that might consider 'donating' it for a report, please PM me.

Re: Chevelle SS Restoration Guide...

I purchased Mr. Hurd's piece when researching my restoration. In reading the guide I noted many, many mistakes, as well as a "fuzzy" writing style which often leads to the question: "What the heck is this guy saying?" Thus, I sat down one day with nothing better to do than examine Mr. Hurd's piece for these errors and highlight them. Chapter 1 begins on page 5, it was not until page 6 that I encountered Mr. Hurd's first error: "In 1968 the VIN plate was located on a bracket riveted to the underside of the instrument panel." Really? The UNDERSIDE? Page 7 has one instance of "fuzzy" writing and one error. Page 10 contributes to the fallacy that the 1969 Chevelle COPOs were a "factory-authorized engine conversion (by the dealerships)" -- something that really torqued me off! Mr. Hurd goes on to murder the 396 to 402 changeover, and on page 12 makes the outrageous claim that "...twenty-two (engine) blocks were available in 1969." By page 14 I was so disgusted and disappointed that I found a better way to spend the remainder of my day.

No, you can't have my copy of the "Chevelle SS Restoration Guide," simply because Mr. Hurd is occasionally right, and until a better guide book is published, I'll need this one.

Re: Chevelle SS Restoration Guide...

Gotcha, Bruce. Amazon has the book in a 'review' mode and I noticed the first error in the second line on the first page concerning 1964. "The VIN plates were stamped on a brightmetal tag riveted to the left front door hinge pillar in 1964." I would think "brightmetal" would be two words and in all the 1964 VIN plates I've seen, none were "riveted" to the A-pillar.

Page 6, for 1968 and 1969, no assembly plants are given. Page 6 also states (for 68/69) that, "Unit numbers began at 100001 for both years at all plants." Wrong, 1969 began with 300001. Why 1964 thru 1969 Canadian Chevelle SS cars aren't mentioned is a mystery as well or that 1965 and 1966 Candian Chevelle SS cars' VINs began with the model year like the 64 US Chevelles and sequence numbers began with 000001 for Canadian Chevelles from 64 thorugh 66. No starting sequence was given for 1970 or 1971 such as Arlington beginning with 200001 in 1970 and Oshawa begining with 500001 in both 1970 and 1971; maybe these were throw-away years.

Anyway, if you're looking for a good Malibu SS/SS396 guide today, you might check out Jeff Steffes book, Chevelle SS 1964-1972 Muscle Car Source Book. I run an ad for his book on every page of ChevelleStuff.

Thats a pretty good book actually. Jeff is a stand up guy and did the proper research when he wrote that book.

300 for that book??? I suppose if you're fully restoring a car that's nothing but for a guy like me who is just trying to get his driver correct that's ridiculous.
