Propane vs gasoline? Pros and Cons

Hello All,
I just bought a 95 f250 4X4 which is set up for propane. Ive never used propane in a vehicle before and was wondering about the pros and cons of using it. I know in Texas we need a permit to buy it for a vehicle, is anyone up to date on this. I have heard you get a little more power from using propane from the higher octane but your gas milage suffers.
Thanks Dave

Re: Propane vs gasoline? Pros and Cons

Never owned a propane vehicle, but as a kid I pumped it at the gas station I worked at.
Propane in liquid form is about -40 degrees, so you can get a freeze 'burn' that hurts if you are not careful when filling. Propane boils at room temp and is heavier than air and can sit in low lying areas in a gaseous form. It expands, IIRC, from liquid to gas 300:1, so a small amount of liquid becomes a lot of vapour fast. With some safety precautions in place, it is very safe to use. The mileage may suffer, but it is cheaper and burns cleaner as I understand it. I have worked on some propane forklifts and they are much cleaner inside.

Re: Propane vs gasoline? Pros and Cons

Ive read up on it a little bit and their right on about it. The truck I bought has 210000+ miles on it and runs perfectly, Im running gas at the moment and there is no miss, blow-by, oil burn or anything. The guy I bought it from said about 130000 of those miles have been on propane. Anyone have any idea what the Texas permit charge is.? Im gonna call around tomarrow to see If I can get anymore info locally.
