Re: How to tell a True Monte Carlo SS???
i'm not sure what the code is for an SS, but there should be a sticker inside the trunklid with the codes for all the options installed on that car at the factory.
but, off hand, i'd say to look for a tight ratio steering box (my 84 Regal T Type is about 3 turns lock to lock and uses the same box as a Monte SS), big sway bars front and rear, 3.73 rear gears, TH200-4r overdrive trans with a certain code on the tag riveted to it (i can't remember what it is, and the trans could have been swapped out in the last 2 decades anyways), body mounts in all the locations including right above the rear axle, and of course the body package (nose, rocker panels, trunk lid spoiler).
a lot of Monte SS's were built with a column shift with 60/40 split bench, so that isn't something that makes it not an SS. but i think they all got the full gauge package.
