Millermatic 250 MIG welder?

I have a chance to buy a Millermatic 250 MIG welder from work, for a good price. It's got the gun & cart, but no tank (no biggie). I thought it was a 3 phase, but turns out it's single. The shop manager here said he didn't like using this series of welders (not just this welder, the whole Millermatic series I guess) because the current flow was inconsistant and sometimes made the welds a bit icky. I'll try it out before I buy it, of course. It looks like it was made in the early '90s or so.

Does anybody have an opinion on these welders? I don't think I'd weld anything more than 1/4".

If the price is right, jump as fast as you can on it. The Millermatics rock - nothing beat blue. Search Ebay real quick to get the current new market price. MSRP on the MM250 new is like $2200. Market price is probably around $1800. I bought a new MM210 last summer through Ebay for ~$1300. Only downside on the 250 is that is a lot of welder for doing the light stuff (sheetmetal, etc.).

Re: Millermatic 250 MIG welder?

I have and love my 210. I build cages and clip cars and 4x4 frames, and do the occassional body work (skining or patching a race car body). The only problem I have had with it in the last 3 years, inner liner. Cheap and easy, and should be changed anyways on all mig wleders.

I priced out the 210 with spool gun and that was $1800 I would jump on it.

I have a MillerMatic 150 - Love it - Never any problems. It's a 220V machine and wotks great for what I do with it. I have welded with a 250 and also very nice. What do they want for it?

Re: Millermatic 250 MIG welder?

I'll let you guys know when I find out.

One of the shop guys said it was probably 10-15 years old. It does have infinate wire and heat settings, which is nice. He also pointed out that it MAY be a tired machine (he wasn't sure), so I'll try it out and see if it needs a tune up (assuming the price is right). On the other hand, I've been using machines made in the '60s so even if this thing was tired, I'd still probably be OK with it.
